Chanterelle is the younger sister of Calico and the aunt of Coax, Cyan, Cora, and Calm.
Calico and Chanterelle come from an old money family living in Literatura on the Ainean continent; the family even claims to be founding members of the city. Their mother named them with what she thought were the most rich sounding names, not realizing that "calico" is most often associated with motley cats and "chanterelle" is a type of mushroom. With names like these, perhaps it's no wonder that both of her daughters ended up rejecting the high society life.
Calico left because she fell in love with a Grianean, a cross-cultural match that was all but forbidden in most Ainean societies and which scandalized their parents. They forbid her from a relationship with Coupe, but she became pregnant and ran away with him, and her parents disowned her. Eventually they moved over to Coupe's home world, and Calico never talked to her parents again. But that's another story.
Chanterelle looked up to her sister and was furious when her parents basically completely wiped her existence from their lives. Whenever she tried to bring up Calico in conversation, she was quickly hushed up. Calico only reached out to her family once, shortly after she had given birth to Coax and Cyan. They were on the run from persecution in the outskirts of Coloratura where they had settled and where a cross-cultural marriage was actually illegal. Their parents agreed to finance Calico's escape to Alltumn and told her to consider it her inheritance, because she would never receive anything else from them. They could not stomach the idea of a young woman travelling alone, but they refused to bring in anyone outside of the family to accompany her, so they ordered Chanterelle to accompany her sister on the trip with strict orders to return as soon as they had reached Alltumn.
At this point, Chanterelle was thoroughly fed up with her parents' attitudes and rules. She enjoyed high society, but she felt that it came at a great cost. She also found that her parents disapproved of her attraction to other women. In finishing school, she'd had a secret relationship with one of her classmates, a member of the green clan called Chartreuse, but she had not dared tell her parents about it, and the relationship more or less ended when school did. She was still too attached to the life she had grown up knowing to want to give it up, and she'd seen first hand that that's what would happen if she embarrassed her parents or went against their wishes.
When Chanterelle boarded the boat with her sister, she had every intention of coming back. She had not packed anything or said goodbye to her friends or done anything that would have indicated some sort of finality - not because she didn't want to betray her intentions, but because she truly believed she would return. On the trip, she bonded with Calico in a way they hadn't done since they were kids. Calico did nothing to try to persuade Chanterelle to leave their family. Calico was loyal and loving to a fault, and her parents had hit on the exact punishment for her by cutting her off from her family. Eventually Calico would find belonging in her own husband and children, but she would never suggest to Chanterelle to follow the same path.
But when they reached Alltumn and Chanterelle saw Calico reunited with her husband and daughter, the younger sister found herself falling head over heels in love with the town. She felt deep in her bones like she'd finally come home and that all the life she'd lived in Literatura had been the dream of someone else's experience. She met Farine, a distant cousin of Coupe's, who agreed to let Chanterelle room with her. So Chanterelle wrote to her parents that she was not returning and settled in to stay.
