In Arcadia, everyone is a shapeshifter, and the natural animal form which people can take is known as the alter. Position in society is determined by the alter's form. For example, people with worm, insect, and rodent alters are slaves; people with normal alters midway in the food chain, such as cats and birds, are commoners; while the nobility have apex predator alters. Occasionally, there are accidents of birth, where people have alters not commensurate with their social class. A rat may be born to nobility, or a dragon to slave parents. These rare mutations are generally accepted into their new social class, although they face a certain amount of opposition from certain factions.

Babel's alter is a goat. Abandoned by his aristocratic family shortly after birth, Babel vows to someday tear down the society that has forsaken him. He is not averse to using underhanded means to do so.
