a lonely little boy with a magical gift
Rumpus stomped up the stairs and kicked his door closed behind him. He snorted angrily, whipping his head about as if trying to shaking away a bad memory. He plopped down on a bit of carpet and buried his head in his paws, breathing heavily. All was silent in the small wooden house; a gentle island breeze came in from his large open window. It rustled his maroon colored fur, and unsettled the paintings on his easel. The top sheet unattached itself and landed on the floor next to him.He peered at it over a small furry paw. It was his most recent work of art: a finger-painting drawing of Rumpus and his older brother Caffrey, a Galactic Jollin, playing on the beach. Obviously Caffrey wasn't his real brother. Their mother had adopted Caffrey before Rumpus's birth. The two had been inseparable from the moment they met. And when their mother died, Caffrey took care of his little brother. For two years now, he'd been Rumpus's primary caregiver. He'd been doing a good job too. Until he met Kreeps.
Rumpus pushed the painting away from him. At only 5 years old, he didn't know much about the world, but even he could tell that Kreeps was bad news. Every time she was around, Rumpus felt anxious and skittish. She was a weirdo. He didn't know what Caffrey saw in her. On top of everything, she was a Bloodred. Caffrey often said the violent reputation of the Bloodreds was undeserved. But all stereotypes were based on truth, Rumpus knew. And she seemed to embody everything their mother had warned them about.
There was a shifting from under the bed. First came his balloon animal dog, it bounded out from under his quilt. It wagged its tail furiously at him and stomped its front balloon paws on the ground. Universal in dog language for "play with me". Unamused, Rumpus gently pushed him away with his tail. The little balloon dog's ears sagged. He heard clinking from the other end of his room. His leggo blocks had made themselves into the shape of his dragon (his favorite shape to build them in to) and they stomped toward him. The little dragon opened its mouth, roared, and spewed orange blocks at him in a mock display of fire. It was a creative act, but Rumpus shook his head and picked an orange block from his mane. The next toy took him by surprise. Rumps jumped as a monkey's shriek came from atop his dresser, and he was suddenly attacked by a flying ball of brown fur. It knocked him onto his back. Before he had time to react, the plush monkey jumped onto him and began to furiously tickle his belly.
"S-s-stop! Oh-kay! You win!" Rumpus cried, trying desperately to escape the monkey's wiggling fingers. "P-please! No more!"
The monkey jumped off the giggling paralix, a smug look on his furry primate face.
"Now really," came a voice from atop the bed. "The boy needs more than foolish antics."
A soft white polar bear plushie was edging himself feet first off the side of Rumpus's bed. He lost his grip, and his plump body fell to the ground gracelessly. He landed sprawled on his back (making the other toys in the room snicker), and looked at Rumpus upside down with his black marble eyes.
"Our boy needs some psychiatric evaluation!" he cried as he approached the small circle. The other toys groaned. The polar bear shot them a glaring look.
"And since none of you are qualified..." he said snootily as the block dragon burped out an orange block and the monkey applauded, "I suppose I should do it. Now Rumpus-"
"Ugh, you honestly think because you used to be a plaything in a shrink's office, you can diagnose everybody's problems?" chimed a doll who appeared from his bookshelf. She had seen better days. Her once darling red dress was dirty and wrinkled with ages of play. What looked like ravioli stained her brown yarn hair.
"You think just because you belonged to his mother once, you can dish out motherly advice?" the polar bear snapped back. It may be impossible for an inanimate object to blush, but the doll came pretty close. Sensing a fight coming on, Rumpus interjected.
"Guys, I'm fine. It's just..." he trailed off.
"Go on, dear, you can tell us," the little doll said, still glaring at the bear. She took a seat next to the balloon animal dog, and started petting his latex back, making his tail go crazy.
Rumpus sighed and explained everything. How his brother was spending all his time with a crazy Bloodred. How he would come home smelling like fear, stale bodies, and metal. A typical Bloodred smell. How he was starting to pick up mannerisms of that crazy Devonti he was hanging around. And worst of all, the incident that had happened earlier that afternoon.
He could still picture it perfectly, Rumpus had been waiting to get picked up from school by Caffrey. They walked home everyday, but today, that dratted Devonti was with him. They walked the dusty island streets, Kreeps providing all of the conversation. She retold tales of the random properties she'd vandalized, her favorite alcoholic drink, the taste of blood, and other topics that sent an icy finger down Rumpus's spine. The worst part was, Caffrey wasn't disturbed at all. He seemed in awe of all the "pranks" Kreeps had pulled. Caffrey had always been a prankster at heart. But Rumpus thought pranks were supposed to be fun, all Kreeps seemed to do was hurt people. He was glad when they finally reached home. After school was Caffrey and Rumpus's playtime, just the two of them. No Bloodreds allowed. He darted up the stairs excitedly when Caffrey grabbed him by the tail and pulled him close, his furry Jollin face more serious than Rumpus had ever seen. Kreeps was waiting a few yards away, examining the white picket fence and pretending she wasn't eavesdropping.
"Listen, little buddy, I can't make it for playtime today," Caffrey said quietly. His eyes pleading at Rumpus to understand.
"Wha-why?"
"There's something me and Kreeps have got to do today."
Rumpus narrowed his eyes in suspicion. "What is it?"
"Let's just say we're going to 'prank' Gorfin for you." Caffrey winked.
"No, Caff, I don't like her... she makes me nervous... please don't."
"What?!" Caffrey raised his voice, "we're doing this for you. Aren't you sick of him always picking on you? We're going to show him he's messed with the wrong kid!"
"You may be doing this for me, but she isn't. Please, Big Brother, don't do it! She's got something nasty planned. I can tell!"
Caffrey snarled, making Rumpus jump backwards in fright. "Listen, kid, I don't know what your problem is with her, but you best learn to get over it. She's the only one in my whole damn town that understands what I'm going through! Can't you see she makes me happy? So stop being an ungrateful little brat and get over it!"
And with that, Caffrey was gone, running down the driveway. Kreeps looked back at Rumpus and smirked. He saw the demons dancing behind her discolored eyes. She winked at him and licked her chops before jogging after Caffrey. Leaving the little Paralix on the porch, lower lip trembling and the tears welling in his eyes.
When he finished telling his story, the toys were enraged. They hollered at Kreeps, scolded Caffrey, and all the while tried comforting Rumpus. The Polar Bear suggested locking her in a state penitentiary. His mother's doll planned on making a pamphlet for Caffrey on the danger of Bloodreds. The monkey bared his teeth, smashing his fists against the ground, and shrieked. Half the blocks had made themselves into the shape of a Devonti and the rest switched between a variety of natural disasters that blew her into a million pieces.
Despite everything that was happening in his life, Rumpus smiled. He was grateful to have such loyal friends. Even if they were only alive because he imagined them to be.
