A Cold Winter's Night

You stumble your way through the Polar Ice Fields, half-blind with frost. Tiny snowflakes form in front of you when the moisture in your breath crystalizes upon hitting the frigid air. "What am I doing out here," you ask yourself, no longer convinced this was a good idea. You'd heard the stories, of course, read about them in a handful of dusty tomes... A special treasure, hidden out here in the icy wastes - a reagent that, when mixed within a specially designed flask, would create a potion capable of bestowing cold, preternatural beauty to those lucky enough to have its secrets. Ah, greed.

You've made it past the small, vicious bear-like creatures that dwell here, picked up a strange, plastic handle you found lying in a snowbank, and now, you dig a small depression in the snow, hoping to get a little shelter from the storm whislt attempting to catch your breath. It's been hours, after all, and the cold is getting into your bones. You close your eyes...

You force your sleepy eyes open again, your frost-covered lashes protesting. It's night. The moon is high in the night sky. You realize the terrible danger you're in. Panicked, you try to stand, to look around - the landscape looks totally different at night. You're lost. Your heart begins to pound in your chest, and you hear strange footsteps, snuffling sounds, small growls... "Please don't be those awful Slushes, come back for something more susbstantial to eat," your mind screams, hopes. You crane your neck, but stay otherwise perfectly still. Some small creatures appear, kicking up powder, rolling about and vocalizing. They're fairly hard to see, because all of them are the same colors as the Ice Field that they live in. Bigger footsteps, now. You see the flash of a snowy mane, and the glint of moonlight on frosted scales. A Glacier Legeica. He whickers softly at the smaller creatures, who respond by clambering over to you, pressing their small, surprisingly warm bodies agaist your terribly cold one. Scraping at a nearby mound in the snow with his crystal hooves, the Legeica uncovers a bunch of Frost Berries, lifts them daintily in his mouth, and nudges at you to take them, which you gladly do. As an afterthought, you pat the creature's nose, again taken aback at the warmth and velvetty texture. "Perhaps the old stories are wrong about these Glacial creatures being so cold and uncaring..." you think as the Legeica curls up near you, his small minion friends resting on your shoulders, or in your lap, bestowing you with life-giving heat. You drift off to sleep once more, pondering the day's occurances.

When you wake, it is dawn. There are no signs of the creatures you encountered in the moonlight - no footprints, not even the stem of the berries you were sure that you'd eaten. A blanket of snow covers you. You stand up, certain now that it must have been a cold-induced dream, and you curse your foolishness for having ever come out here. As you begin to walk away from the snowy alcove that had sheltered you, your foot hits something with a dull clang - a Bucket of Polar Water that surely wasn't there before. Bemused, you attach the plastic handle you found just yesterday, pick up the precious bucket, and head back towards Alpendale, which you can see clearly on the horizon - only an hour's walk or so away. You will remember that kind, noble beast for the rest of your life.
