I have heard so many stories about orphans being taken in by kindly nuns, friendly animals, or loving families; I've heard just as many stories about horrid people who should never have been parents, and the children who run from them. My parents were not to be kindly nuns nor friendly animals, they were not loving (of me at least) but that did not mean they were horrid (though they probably should not have been parents). They were beatniks, drunk off the idea of following in the footsteps of Kerouac among other things. I was drunk off the idea of following them.

I was young, I had access to an old car, everything I owned could fit that car, I had a little bit of money, but most of all, I had ambition.

I took off after them, with nothing more than an old postcard, and a lot of hope.
