When you're forced to fight in a war for a home that is no longer yours, you're not inclined to give it your all. I used to be the queen of Contessa before I was overthrown by a desire for this... "democracy." My people loved me, or so I thought; alas, the idea of being able to cast a vote won them over. Violently. The revolution was horrible, and the politicians are corrupt and dubious. My children and husband were slain before my eyes, but I was spared and conscripted into this war to fight on the front lines, where I know I will surely perish. But somehow... somehow I'm at peace with this. I would like to say that I need to fight back, to regain my position and the adoration of my people. But how could I love those who have called for the murder of my family? Perhaps joining my kin in the afterdark will be easier.

It is weeks before we march off to battle when I notice the difference between the other fighters and myself. Their armor is branded with the symbol of their new nation. Mine is not. It occurs to me that I am clearly not one of them. Why, then, am I fighting for them? What would happen if I left? What more could they possibly take from me that they haven't already? It's a split decision, but I've come to a conclusion. I am going to lend my aid to the other side. I am going to fight the institution that believed they could break me. My family will not have died in vain if I can avenge them. It won't please me to see the blood of my enemies drip from my sword, but it may very well set me free. On my way out of the city, I strike down three guards, and that alone makes me more nauseous than I care to admit. If my plan truly is revenge, then I shall need to steel my nerves.
