arcana;
i. secrets or mysteries
ii. tarot card associations (major and minor arcana)

She awoke in the forest, clammy and pale. She did not remember where she was, but her hands were covered in wet soil, and her fingers black from digging. The dank, rotting earth was heavy and stagnant underneath her nails. She brought each cold fingertip up to her face and inhaled. They smelled of iron and rot.

Something compelled her to continue digging. She was aware of a small tremor, a strange presence, palpitating alongside her slow-beating heart. It was dark and deep and heavy, like a shiny, spindly-legged tick that has gorged itself to pop on blood.

Deeper and deeper she dug. With every handful of wet soil that she piled aside, the strange feeling in her chest grew, as if someone had stolen into her torso and filled it with black worms in place of organs.

There was something standing behind her, now. A presence at her back, watching her dig. She could not stop.

Her fingers brushed against something leathery, and she pulled from the earth several small, hard lumps. They were shaped like eggs, and they felt warm. The worms inside her jerked and squirmed like a thousand black lines, and she felt the strange presence behind her lean in at the nape of her neck.

The presence took the eggs from her side, from where she had placed them, and crushed them, one by one.

She opened her mouth to breathe past the choking rot that was rising in her throat, and heaved black bile onto the soil.

She could not stop digging.

a mage and a sorceress with dark magic. her tarot card representation is The Moon, which represents illusion and subconscious, and is often one's 'shadow' self or weakness.

arcana uses dark sorcery -- which she used to exact revenge on a cruel noble who slaughtered her family -- but for a heavy price: darkness lives and breathes inside her, and her blood is black. eventually the darkness will seep into her soul, and her body will cease to exist as she's consumed completely.

she shares her story with clause. he's part of a powerful aristocratic group of nobles who're all corrupt and cruel and very, very rich -- and this guy is no exception: he's extremely cold and calculating and wicked. as a noble, he has a lot of power over the kingdom alongside the King.

the nobles and upper echelon are very, very distrustful of sorcery and magic -- they believe that magic-wielders can easily overthrow the throne or take the crown by force. clause orders a mass genocide / execution of mages and sorcerers. arcana, at the time, has not developed her magic yet, so she is spared but watches as her family is killed.

as she gets older, her powers start to develop. arcana has dual magic -- that is, she can choose light (day) or dark (night) to fuel her sorcery. light magic cannot be used to kill, only to heal. dark/night is more powerful for combat, but comes with a heavy price: the darkness lives inside of you and eventually consumes you. but because she seeks revenge for her family's death, she chooses night.
