Keziah was born in New Orleans to two former slaves. Being that the color of her skin was not white, she didn't have many of the same opportunities as other girls her age... she couldn't go to school, for one. Her mother homeschooled her the best she could, which was mostly just an education on how to sew and do chores and be a good wife. But her mother also taught her Voodoo and how to communicate with the Iwa, as she was a Voodoo witch.

When she was seventeen, Keziah got knocked up by a twenty-five year old plantation worker named Isaac Fischer. The two got married right away, got their own small house, and Keziah had a little boy who they named James. The little family was quite happy, and two years later Keziah had another little boy named Jacob. Another two years later and Keziah was pregnant again, though suffered from a miscarriage.

Life was not easy for black folk in the south. Keziah and Isaac faced their fair share of bullying and abuse. But the worst of it came one night when Keziah was twenty-nine. She was pregnant again, and hoping for a girl. Keziah had just served her husband and two little boys dinner when someone kicked their door in. All she could hear was gunfire, and all she remembered seeing as this demonic aura around the leader of the posse. Keziah tried to run to shield one of her boys but felt the bite of a bullet in her back. She went down.

When she awoke she was in the doctor's office, recovering from two gunshot wounds to her back. The doctor told her she had been unconscious for days and was lucky to be alive. All Keziah wanted to know was how her husband and boys were. To that, the doctor did not have good news. All three of them had been killed, and she had lost the baby.

Keziah went home, as she had no where else to go. She could hardly stand it there, seeing the blood on the floor. But there was something else there... a foul sense tickled it's way up Keziah's spine. She turned to the only thing she knew what to do... Voodoo. From the Iwa she learned that there had, indeed been something sinister at play, something more than just racism. A demon had possessed a man who riled up several other men into attacking her family and lynching several other people.

Enraged by it, Keziah found out who the men were, and snuck into their homes while they were gone to steal some of their personal effects. She crafted little dolls using their clothing and hair she took from their brushes and proceeded to stick them with pins. In a matter of days, all three men befell tragic and unexplainable deaths... one by a heart attack, one slipped and broke his neck, and the other was kicked in the head by a horse.

Keziah didn't feel better, and she could no longer stay in that house where the reminder of what had happened and what she had lost would constantly torment her. So she took up her husband's guns and left. She didn't know where she was going, but listened to the Iwa who said they would help her get vengeance upon the demon who killed her family.

They led her north, to Independence Missouri, where she got close to finding the demon. It left a trail of death in it's wake. But it was no longer there. The Iwa told Keziah the demon went westward. So, Keziah joined the next wagon train. They didn't much like having a negro with them, so Keziah kept to herself. She learned quick that life in the West was harsh. It was rife with illness, disease, broken wagon wheels and axels, starvation. But if Keziah was one thing, it was resourceful.

When she got to a little town called Prosperity the Iwa sent her signals that she should leave the wagon train. And so Keziah sold her oxen and wagon to one of the immigrant families she had been traveling with for a horse and some money and went on her way. Indeed, the demon had been there... she could almost smell it. A Buffalo soldier in the saloon was talking about how nearly his entire regiment had gotten sick with cholera, and how he thought it was on the clothing that was given to them by one of the white sergeants of another regiment(they usually got hand-me-downs).

Keziah had nothing left to lose, she wasn't scared of cholera. So she set out to where the buffalo soldiers were located to try to find the demon's trail... only she got lost. For days she wandered the deserts trying to locate either them or the demon. That's when she ran into Liadan. She simply told Liadan that she was hunting and had gotten lost... she didn't specify what she was hunting.

But the more the women traveled together, the more they got to know each other. Liadan had secrets of her own that came to light, and Keziah finally admitted that she was hunting the demon that killed her family. Liadan offered to help hunt the demon down with her, which Keziah accepted. However, in the meantime, while hunting the elusive demon the women found all kinds of death and evil needing vanquishing. Keziah figured, might as well continue to ride with Liadan and try to make the world a better place for others, as the world would never been a good place for her. One day, with Liadan's help, they would find and destroy the demon that killed Keziah's family. One day...
