Bakasura

There once was a monster born of tooth, and claw, and hunger who lurked upon the outskirts of the quite Indian village of Ekachakra. Any who dared venture into or out of the village met their demise beneath his claws and between his ever ravenous fangs. The creature’s hunger ran deep and endless, thus the village chief came to the monster and begged for his feasting to stop.

Face shadowed beneath eh deep reaches of his hood, the creature tilted his head back and laughed. “What’s in it for me, human?” he asked.

And with this demon, the chief struck up a deal. Every day, a cart overflowing with every delicacy the village could muster would be brought to the demon. Then, he would have his fill, both of the food and of the man who brought the cart. In exchange, he would let all others freely enter and exit the village of Ekachakra.

For many years Bakasura imprisoned Ekachakra beneath the control of his clawed thumb. It was only upon the arrival of the Pandava brothers did things begin to change.

Cast into exile, the Pandava brothers arrived at Ekachakra and sought alms from the villagers. It was here where they learned of Bakasura, the vile demon who stalked travelers throughout the woods. When a woman, whose son was to bring the sacrificial cart on the morrow, came to the Pandava’s with tears in her eyes, Bhima, demon slayer and son of Kunti, declared he could defeat Bakasura and make his vile feast cease forever.

Instead of the woman’s son, Bhima brought the cart to the demon’s doorstep. And, instead of letting the gluttonous monster eat his fill, Bhima began to consume the food himself, right in front of the now-furious Bakasura.

“What exactly do you think you’re doing?” The demon’s pale, blue eyes narrowed to furious slits as he watched Bhima suck down his delectable feast. His second mouth, a wide and toothy vertical slit running down the length of his torso, twitched in hungry anticipation.
