Many moons and cycles thereof, members of the Almárëa (ahl-mahr-ay-ah) clan had been protectors of the Hornwood. An ever-expanding forest of thick trunks and pale bark, the trees themselves so old they had outlived many of their guardians. The canopies stretched so high that it was believed this was the point where the earth kissed the sky, two lovers destined to never touch anywhere else. The wood was filled with many a spectacular thing: golden faeries as small as fireflies, iridescent dragonflies that looked like they were made of jewels and mushrooms that glowed bright in the dark under a full moon. Magic ran through the roots of the trees and into the soil of the Hornwood itself, making the flowers that dappled the forest floor drip honey from their petals.

It was late summer and the thick heat was beginning to cool with autumn breezes that rustled the lush foliage high above. The Hornwood was particularly beautiful this time of year, the deciduous trees just beginning to turn the fiery colors of fall. The Almárëa elves were busy in their duties - to watch over the Hornwood's unicorns who dwelled within. The unicorns were shy but gentle creatures, aloof and unconcerned with the elves that lived on the fringes of the verdant wood. But without them, the magic that gave life to the Hornwood, to the world as a whole, would cease to exist.
