You're lost. Shouldn't have taken that turn, like four turns ago. Your car is out of gas, so you decide to walk. You have to be close, right? Your friend said it was the farm with the big sign that said "Organic Goat Milk" out front, or was it "Organic Eggs?" You're not even sure of that anymore.

All these farms look the same. The sun has long since slipped below the horizon, and the only light you have to see by is the moon, hazy through the thin clouds. There's a farm ahead with a sign. You head towards it, hoping it's the sign you were supposed to look for. It's hard to read it in the dark, but you can just make out the word "goat," which is promising. You turn to walk down the drive. Even if it's not the one you're looking for, maybe they'll have a phone they'll let you use so you can call your friend.

The pasture to your left has a broken fence. The drive gets more and more overgrown as you walk further. The closer you look at your surroundings, the more you feel like this place hasn't been visited by anyone in a long time. You're about to turn around and head back to the road when you hear a faint sound somewhere off to your left. You walk over the broken fence. It sounded like an animal, maybe one of the farm's goats?

You can just make out a silhouette ahead of you. It's a statue, or an animal standing very still. It has ears sticking out to the sides like a goat, but it isn't moving, and there's something...off, about its figure. You can't tell quite what that is yet. Goosebumps tickle your skin, but you shake off the feeling. It's just a goat, right?

You're almost on top of it when you can finally see, it is a goat after all. It's pure white in the moonlight, with big, black eyes that aren't quite a goat's eyes staring right at you. You freeze as it turns its head ever so slightly to face you head on. Something is very, very wrong about the goat, but it takes you a moment to realize what's so wrong about it. The goat is standing on its two back hooves, it's front legs hanging unnaturally at its sides in a mockery of human posture.

You want to run, but you stand, transfixed, as the goat sizes you up. You open your mouth to speak, or scream, but the goat beats you to it.

Leave.

It's not a request, but a command. You aren't even sure if you heard the word with your ears, or if it was said inside your brain like a thought from someone else intruding upon your mind. The goat certainly didn't move its mouth.

Your legs can move again, and you use them to turn and run until your sides are burning and the muscles in your legs won't stop shuddering. You are back over the broken fence and out on the road before you're able to even think again. You don't look back towards the way you came. You know better now.

Days, weeks, years later, you aren't sure if that night was just a bad dream, or if it was just a story you read about somewhere, someone's idea of a fun Halloween ghost story. But on nights when the moon is full, and fog rolls in from the abandoned places in the world, you remember the goat who wasn't a goat, and your heart beats a little faster.
