If you're walking down the streets of Mexico City on a foggy evening you may get a glimpse of him. He's short, with the stature and proportions of a child, but the baggy black cloak he wears doesn't hide flesh and blood. The locals call him Tragar, "to swallow" which only hints at his true nature. He swallows souls. Just how he gets those souls people don't like to say. Some he steals, others he buys. His favorites are the ones he won in games of poker. What happens to the souls once he's swallowed them, no one really knows.

If you follow him a ways you may catch a glimpse of him feeding Squeakers, the rat who lives in his eye socket. He doesn't miss much, despite the lack of eyeballs, so he probably knows you're there. Maybe he's letting you follow him on purpose. Simple curiosity has won him more than one soul along the way, which is why he rarely chooses to hide his true appearance. The scythe on his back hasn't seen use for reaping souls in centuries, but he keeps it for the fear it sends down the spine.

If you follow him for long enough, he may lead you back to his apartment. He doesn't pay rent, but the landlady hasn't aged a day in decades, so perhaps that has something to do with it. There are several potted plants and succulents lining the window ledges, and you can spy plenty more inside. He waters them on a strict schedule, and cares for them with the obsessive attention to detail of a scholar and the affection of a parent. None of them have died that anyone living remembers.

If you know what's good for you, you won't enter his apartment. In fact, if you really know what's good for you, you'll turn around and never return, except maybe to leave a gift on his doorstep next Día de Muertos. He enjoys plants, and gravestones of famous people. He wouldn't turn away the bones of a lesser saint, either, or some cheese for Squeakers. But, do not linger. He never forgets a face, or the soul behind it. If you like to keep your soul there, walk away. Walk quickly.
