There’s something sitting in the corner of your room.

You can’t tell what it is. But it’s watching you from the shadows, the whites of its eyes visible from where you lie, shock still and clammy, on your bed.

The sheets are ice cold under your toes, and your hands are sweaty. You clutch the blanket with quivering fingers and close your eyes, hoping that if you count to ten that you’ll wake from this nightmare, shaken and scared, but safe.

You get to five when you hear it move.

It sounds like a heavy body sliding against a wooden floor. Fear erupts, shocking and bright, racing down to the base of your spine until you are frozen down to even your too cold toes. You think that your heart will surely beat out of your chest, and that perhaps the thing in the corner wishes to take it from you.

As if to announce this fear, your pulse roars to a crescendo; the beat of your heart is a loud, frantic plea, rhythmic in your ears. You think the thing in the corner likes that, because you hear the sharp pinprick of its ridged nails drag slowly over the paneling like a caress.

It lunges at you, then; there’s a shock of something dark and thick running hot and fast over your icy fingers (blood, you think) --

-- a searing pain across your midriff and the sick glistening of viscera (mine, you think)--

-- and then you wake from your nightmare, retching with bile heavy on your tongue, choking on screams that echo into the dark, dark night.
