“If you could fix them up quickly, that’d be great!”
Happiny happily took the tray of Pokéballs from the trainer, while off to her side a mentoring Chansey nodded briefly.
That was a good sign!

Walking back behind the receptionist desk, she carefully placed the five orbs in the rejuvenation machine, brow furrowing slightly. This was the tricky part, at least for her. She was so close to passing this stage of her nurse training!

Ok. Five Pokémon, different types. So set for a broad spectrum healing…oh! And one of them is poisoned! So I have to add an antidote treatment!

She tapped in the correct order to the touchscreen, and the machine let out a happy chirp, humming softly. Five green lights indicated that all the occupants were restored to perfect health, and Happiny returned the Pokéballs back to the trainer with a smile. The human took them, nodding his thanks as he left a tip in a nearby jar.

I did it!

The Chansey waited until the trainer had left before letting out a happy coo, giving Happiny a pat on the back.
“Well done! You passed with flying colors!” She joyfully remarked, gesturing to the double-doors behind them.
“There’s a few sick Pokémon that need to be treated normally; consider that the final piece of your test!”

As Happiny made her way through the cream-colored doors, and down the similarly shaded hallway, she couldn’t help but grin. It was an odd thing to think about; humans not earning experience like they did….but she was soooooo close to the next level. Sure, they were technically just numbers, but some abilities you just couldn’t learn until you made it to that magical level.
…Some Pokémon had tried of course. It never turned out well.
Numbers or not, each time she passed a benchmark, she did feel a bit stronger…

Each task made the total numbers climb closer and closer to a higher level…and it was quite a tingly feeling when that finally happened! This time though, she’d be able to learn Refresh! And maybe then Soft-boiled. Both abilities would then make her a full time nurse! As of now, she could only handle the minor things, like basic healing methods and operating the reviving machine. Evolving would speed that process along even faster than leveling up though…

As she applied some anti-burn cream to a rather grumpy Raichu on a medical bed, Happiny tried to not let her internal pout show. She still needed to find an oval stone….

Every day she went looking in a massive forest for one; they didn’t naturally occur there, but apparently a trainer had lost a few, and said whoever found some could claim them! So far, no luck from anybody searching though.

Now that the Raichu was less grumpy from his burns, she moved onto the other and apparently final patient. The tired Bulbasaur only needed a dose of Aromatherapy to perk up, and with that, it was on to the paperwork. In her opinion at least, those evil forms were the most annoying part of the job.

Thankfully, the morning test scenarios were simple to catalogue. The trainer’s Pokémon and what she did to heal them, and then the treatment of the other two patients. Each event had a separate clipboard, and Happiny carefully balanced them under her small arms as she tried to find her Mentoring Chansey.

“Ah! There you are! So, how did it go?”
Hearing her mentor’s voice behind her caused the poor pink Pokémon to squeak, dropping all of the clipboards to the ground.

“…ok that was a bit mean of me, but you DO have to be ready for anything!” Her mentor joked, helping Happiny pick up the boards and looked them over.
“These…all look exceptional! I wish everyone filled out these as neatly! Well, you certainly passed, no surprise here. Take the rest of the day off, and come back tomorrow! I’ll get you started on learning your more advanced duties. And as soon as you can learn those two new abilities in a few weeks, you’ll have more responsibility too!”

Hearing a bell chime at the receptionist area, her mentor flashed Happiny a smile and quickly sped away; a feat that always surprised the smaller Pokémon. She wondered how it’d be to be bigger and still move that quickly…

But half the day off? She could go searching again!

Thankfully she had already packed a lunch, so it was a simple matter to eat and then hurry off to the forest. It wasn’t too far away, just about a half hour down the cobblestone road. The Pokémon center was one of the more rural ones, about three hours from the main city if you took a bus. But, it was home, and Happiny enjoyed the ever-changing routines at the Center.

Plopping down on a rocky outcropping, the small Pokémon surveyed the meadow. The clearing wasn’t too large; barely off the beaten path. But if she was a trainer…where would she have gone…Honestly she didn’t understand quite a few things humans did, so that thought wasn’t too helpful.Hopping off the largest rock, she proceeded down a small path to her left, which wound through the tall tree stands, sunlight streaming through the leaves. If the trainer HAD been this way, it’d be down one of these paths. These were some of the last ones she hadn’t checked. Of course, someone else very well might have.
But other than buying an Oval stone for a crazy price, this was her best shot.
After an hour walking the same path without finding anything, Happiny felt her usual upbeat spirit begin to waver. She wandered off the path slightly, looking for anything out of the ordinary. Of course, it was the usual; sticks, non-useful stones, and a surprised Caterpie.

She apparently wasn’t watching her feet enough, because before she knew it, Happiny face-planted into a grassy outcropping. Letting out a slight groan, she sat up and glared back at the offending item that had tripped her up-Within seconds, the glare was gone, and a wide exuberant smile made its way onto her face.

The next morning, a beaming Happiny walked into the Pokémon center with the biggest grin on her face, and a white stone held under her arm.
