All children, except one, grow up. They soon know that they will grow up, and the way Wendy knew was this. Darling Leon is much older than he looks, but that's rather par the course with wizards. Even so, he looks young even by those metrics; has the appearance of a young teenager, despite being almost four hundred years old. Just lucky, he supposes. His apparent age and his false right eye are two subjects best left unremarked upon.

He does not hail from the Western country originally; he was born, in what would eventually become the Central kingdom, a few centuries ago. His identical twin brother (Peter by name, but known to Darling as "Dearest" in near-exclusivity) was human, as was the rest of their family. They are all long-passed and his feelings on them -- and humans in general -- are quite complicated.

Darling and Dearest's relationship was... shall we call it fraught?
One supposes it would be melancholy to watch a person identical to yourself grow old and die while you are stuck never aging past your teenage years-- even if that person is responsible for your missing eye.

He could, in all likelihood, apply a magical glamor to look older, but he doesn't.
I repair things, I don't change them isn't much of a answer, but it's the only one he ever gives as to why.

Now

Darling now owns an antique shop in a city in the Western country, which has a reputation for being where all lost things end up. In the centuries he's owned it, a great many things have passed through his hands (he tends not to ask questions about the sourcing on things, so long as they're not cursed or liable to incur the wrath of a stronger wizard on his head), and a lot of information passes by his eye. He and the human population of the city in which he live harbor a mutual distrust. He serves no human clientele, but has a steady stream of wizards and witches who turn up in search of things they've lost-- or in search of curiosities.

As of late, he's forged a very strange friendship(?) with a wizard from the east by the name of Samsa, though to call them "friends" may be something of a misnomer. Samsa is a horrible damp worm of a man and Darling is clearly only really invested in Samsa's abilty to smuggle him a form of tobacco that has long been nominally prohibited in the Western country. Nonetheless, they have an... amicable working relationship...?

(The humor of their relationship -- as Samsa's one great ambition in life is to get lucky with a large-bosomed Western witch, and yet the only Western person who will deign to talk to him is Darling, a wizard who's stuck looking forever like a 14 year old boy -- is not lost on Darling.)
