Korvan is the son of a wealthy nobleman and a low-class thief. His parents' courtship was long and unusual in that his mother stole an expensive belonging from his father, leading them to eventually meet. Korvan's father originally intended to have the thief arrested and killed, but when he cornered the thief himself, he was stunned that she was not fearful for the forfeit of her life. Talking with him, she made him understand that she could not afford to regret any of the decisions she made, for she had nothing to support herself but her thieving. Confused, he let her escape without consequence.

Following this encounter, Korvan's father did not seek her out again, but began to change his views about the plight of those poorer than him. He became more generous with those less fortunate. Korvan's mother watched this transformation from a distance and began to understand him better, changing her view of him from a stuck-up noble to having an appreciation for his newfound kindness.

Eventually, she began to leave little trinkets for him, stolen gifts that he frowned at for the implications. Although she reassured him that they only came from those she deemed deserved to be stolen from, he made her promise to cease her gift-giving.

Eventually, they became closer and had Korvan.

Korvan's paternal family, upon discovering that their son had refused beneficial marriage proposals in favour of a commoner, intended to kill her and their son. Korvan's mother brought her child to the Thieves' Guild in order to keep him safe; unfortunately, neither of his parents survived his grandparents' rage.

Korvan was raised in the less shady side of the Guild, and grew up bored with its system. As a young teenager, he left, unaware of its thievery-based half. A few years later, he was caught stealing from another guild member ( though he was unaware of this ), and was brought to the other half of the Guild, where he has worked and been a part of ever since.
