I operate in concert with my twin sibling.

There is no living being - in your dimension or elsewhere - that can resist our influence. We are everywhere. Though you can not see us nor smell us nor taste us upon your tongue, we shall forever be working tirelessly for as long as the cosmos shimmer brightly against the velvety blackness of space.

My brother is universally feared by the living, yet cares for them all the same once it is time to cross over into his realm. For those who lived full lives, he is openly kind and warm, eager to calm their bewildered minds and ferry them off to Paradise. For those of the less than savory sort, he is awash with fatherly pity, knowing they are destined for an end filled with eternal torment.

I personally don’t understand why he’s kind to any of them, good or bad. It seems a waste, to me. Perhaps this is because I will never know them. Perhaps I am simply unkind.

Yet I do find it funny that he is the one so hated, when it is I who decides when they leave. Deep within the belly of my gilded ship, who sails eternally through the starlight sea of space, there sits a timepiece for every living creature. Clocks, watches, dials, hourglasses; they are as numerous and varied as all the beings who have ever existed. When the last grain falls or the clock strikes midnight, that creature's time on earth is no more, and my brother collects his charge. Some devices cease their journey nearly as soon as they are built, while others tick on and on with seemingly no end in sight.

But make no mistake, dear reader. Even the sand that falls with languid slowness will eventually let go of its final grain. You can not outrun us, for we are eternal. As long as a starlit heart still thrums within the vast chest of the universe, we shall forever and always be; he the shepherd of souls and I the keeper of the hourglass. Death and Time.
