"Is that really all you have to say to me?"
His golden eyes narrowed, following her slender silhouette across the room as she stood from her chair and paced towards the large, ornate window facing the city streets. She was quiet for a moment as she drew back the curtains, light flooding the room as she gazed down at the world below.
"There is nothing more to say, Virgil." She replied, her tone detached and distant. "I don't need you the way you need me. I need to move on. Those people down there," She gestured her slender fingers out the window, her eyes still fixed on the bustling streets, "they need you. Isn't that enough?"
"I don't believe that." He replied coolly. "And no, it isn't. You know why I do what I do, and it's not to fulfill some emptiness. Don't patronize me."
She tucked a long white strand of hair behind her ear and turned to face him. Her striking blue eyes met his gaze, confident and sure as she replied. "Let's not forget where my patronage has gotten you."
He furrowed his brow, frowning at her apparent apathy. "That's not what I meant and you know it. Just what does it take to get through to you these days?" From across the room, Virgil advanced on her, closing the distance between them in an instant. A draft followed his impossible movement, gently blowing strands of Juliana's hair back. In those ethereal eyes of hers, he swore he saw her confidence waver, if only for a moment.
There was a long silence between them after that. It appeared Juliana had briefly forgotten what this man was capable of, and had just been firmly reminded.
"Tell me you don't care, and I'd leave you alone. It's that simple." Virgil stared down at her expectantly, and she withdrew her gaze, casting it downward instead.
"You don't have to admit anything. Not yet." He spoke softly to her, calmer now. He leaned in closer, and Juliana could feel the warmth and weight of his body press against her. "The fact that you haven't denied it is enough..."
Juliana could feel her face flushing as she pulled away, turning her back on him. She knew he was smiling without having to look, flustering her further. He was the only one who could do this to her.
"You know how to find me, Jul." She heard him say.
"... If you do need me."
She turned to meet his gaze once more, only to find he had gone. She stood in the silence of the empty room for a few moments, her expression softening. In a few steps, she was back to the window, looking out on the vast city laid out before her.
Perhaps she'd see him out there.
