Phase is, as one might say, 'not quite right'. No one, himself included, knows from where he came. He merely appeared there one day, on the outskirts of Shadowglen, his shack being the last sliver of civilization before the looming, tangled wilderness of the woods.
The young Jollin has one purpose and one purpose only: to collect skulls. Even he can not adequately explain why he collects them, but it seems his attraction to skulls has something to do with their aesthetic. their black, void-like sockets, their rows of exposed teeth, their eerie, permanent grins. Perhaps he sees a little of himself in their image, but whatever the case, he adores them.
Do not be fooled, however, by the morbid nature of his hobby. Phase would never kill simply to harvest the skull of his victim. In fact, the very idea of killing -- or even the act of purposefully causing harm to another -- revolts him. He would rather die than do something as horrid as kill.
As he scours the forest floor in search of carcasses whose skulls he can harvest, it is not uncommon for him to happen upon wounded creatures, which he always brings back to his hut where he attempts to nurse them back to health. When he fails, he often cries for hours, mourning the passing of the creature he tried so hard to save. When he succeeds, he rejoices and releases the wee beast back into the wild. He keeps one pet for himself, a rattus named Splinter, who refused to leave the comforting care of his unlikely savior.
If you encounter Phase while walking the meandering trails throughout the woods, do not be afraid. Though his yellowed teeth, black eyes, and unkempt fur, often stiff with dirt and grime, might make for an alarming appearance, he is not to be feared. He is often lonely, and he may try to take you to his hut, eager to show you his collection. If he does, please do try to treat him kindly. He may be a trifle eccentric and frightening, but beneath his unsettling exterior is a warm and gentle soul, yearning only to be loved and understood.
