Every time she speaks, it sounds like the very definition of insanity. A crowd screaming, whispering, crying, laughing at once. But the worst part is that they're all saying the same thing, all saying exactly what Phobia demands of them. All those voices, all trapped just where she wants them. A tangled multitude. Or sometimes only a solitary voice. But though her mouth moves, her own voice never sounds.
"I keep them close at hand." The collection all around you, of jars and shells and sparkling trinkets, is lovely to the eyes, but.... "All my sweet voices. Maybe they weren't always mine--but they are now. Safe and sound, ready for me to use as I like."
She looks down briefly, then casts her eyes back up at you and grins, showing all of her many, many teeth. "Would you like to see my new experiments?" She hops to her feet with an almost childlike enthusiasm, belied by the sneer on her lips and the glint in her eyes. "I'm sure they'd love to meet you. Of course, they'd never tell you so themselves." She curls around a cloth-covered cage, catlike, before gripping the fabric in her jaws and pulling it away to reveal several small trapped creatures. One covers its mouth with tiny, shaking paws. One's mouth is open in a silent scream. All stare at you, quaking and waiting in dumb, unending silence.
Phobia, in her many-splendored voice, shouts and mutters and hisses and says, "What once was theirs will never be theirs again. What is mine is mine forever. If you love something, keep it close, but never keep it whole, or it will find its way loose." She looks at you and licks her teeth. "You are very lucky I don't love you."
She laughs with a hyena's cackle and a jackal's bark and a crow's call.
Venomous voice tempts me,
Drains me, bleeds me,
Leaves me cracked and empty.
Drags me down like some sweet gravity.
The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been.
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again.
And I feel this coming over like a storm again.
Drains me, bleeds me,
Leaves me cracked and empty.
Drags me down like some sweet gravity.
The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been.
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again.
And I feel this coming over like a storm again.
