I hate how people are always looking at me like they expect me to strike a heroic pose or something. I take after Dad so I must have the power to do battle with the army of the Ghost King or band all the citizens of the Ghost Zone together to save the world.
Lil's the lucky one. My twin is like an anti-ghost, unable to be possessed or made transparent. She never has to worry about sinking through the wall she's leaning on or accidentally blasting someone's science project to ash.
She's also pretty good at convincing ghosts and humans not to mess with her. Try calling her Lillith sometime and see what happens.
Lil comes to lean on the locker next to mine as I'm cramming my algebra book into the only open space on the shelf. "Ready for our last hour of quality public education?"
My sister is the only person I know who can pull off the goth look with bubble gum pink highlights. She's the rebel child Mom always wanted with a fashion sense all her own. "I'm ready for a nice nap. How was Lit?"
Lil scorches the ceiling with her eye roll. "Albert spent half the hour criticizing our pronunciation of the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. Our cousin's latest learning crush is Shakespeare."
I'm still laughing as we take our seats for Human-Ghost Relations. Anyone who has ever met Aunt Jazz won't be surprised by the fact that her son is her clone right down to the turquoise eyes and bossy tone. Albert was declared a genius at five. He's the kid whose whole paper is done a week before the outline is due.
Miss Spouk's class may be boring for a half-ghost but she never ceases to be entertaining. She wears a pair of six-inch heels to hide the fact that her feet don't quite reach the floor. Half the time she forgets to pick them up when she glides. The classroom floor is covered in scratch marks.
I spend the next hour staring at the back of Nari's head as she passes notes to Lil. Dad loves to tease Uncle Tuck that his daughter gets her looks entirely from her mother. She's been Lil's best friend since preschool. I first fell for her on the playground, watching her swing across the monkey bars with a grace no four-year-old should be able to pull off.
The final bell rings at last. I get a whiff of strawberry shampoo as Nari scoops up her books and falls into step with Lil. "Got any weekend plans?"
"We're staying over at Gram and Gramp's. It wouldn't be so bad if Albert wasn't invited."
Nari groans. "At least he'll have that big history project to keep him busy, right?"
"I can't believe I got stuck with him as my partner. How about you?"
"I'm paired with Paula. If I can get her to set her pom-poms aside for five minutes and crack a book or two, we might manage a passing grade. How about you, Danny?"
"Hey Junior!
Dexter got all of his dad's athletic abilities. Unfortunately, he also got Dash's tiny brain. He reminds me so much of a cartoon bull that I'm tempted to take off my red shirt and wave it.
"You better put some work into our poster. I've got practice all day on Saturday and if I get a bad grade on this, I'm out of the next game. Got it?"
He won't try to shove me up against a locker with Lil there. She once tipped off Poindexter that there was a new bully in town and Dexter got to spend half a school day inside his own locker. There's plenty of meaning in his look. There are places my sister can't go to protect me.
"I'll have it done by Monday. I swear."
"You better." Lil gives him the evil eye until he turns the corner.
"I'm so sorry, Danny. That's rotten luck." Nari's voice is full of sympathy. I want so badly to lean forward and see what would happen but Lil's giving me that special look, the one that says she doesn't need any kind of powers to read my thoughts.
The three of us part in front of Tucker's gadget shop. He has the latest devices before they're even made available online. Nari offers us a wave and a smile as Lil gives my arm a playful punch.
"Come on, Romeo. Let's go have some family fun."
Walking is so boring when you can fly. I don't dare go ghost around Lil. She can weaken a full ghost and short out my powers completely with a touch. The only person she has no affect on is Dad.
"Wait up, you guys! Wait for me!"
Albert's got his usual traveling library on his back. He looks like a turtle with glasses and he's just about as slow.
"Have you given any thought to our project, Lil? I was thinking about it when I realized Biology was a review day. As if I wasn't prepared for the unit exam a week ago." He shifts the weight of the bag, stumbling a bit. "We don't want to just slap together a few picture cutouts like everybody else. I know seven percent of our grade may not seem like much, but every grade counts toward our grade point average and we can't slack off like the rest of them."
"Why don't you get started on the research and I can help with poster design. You're much better at fact finding."
Albert taps the side of his nose as he thinks it over. "Well...you are pretty good at design stuff. If I can just get Gramp Jack's computer to load something other than Ghost Grabber, we might be able to get some work done. If only the system I built at home was portable."
Gram Maddie answers the door, grabbing each of us in a hug. The smell of cranberry hazelnut brownie cookies has my mouth watering as the timer in the kitchen dings. Jack comes running upstairs from the lab, brandishing something that looks like a shiny silver pooper scooper.
"Hey kids! You're just in time! Check out the Fenton Ghost Gripper. It's guaranteed to bring any ghost to a dead halt."
The press of a button sends a glob of green goo flying through the air to splatter Albert's glasses. Lil and I completely fail to smother our laughter as Albert storms upstairs.
Maddie shoots Jack a look and follows with a plate of steaming cookies after seeing to it that the two of us have our share. Lil goes up and gives Jack a hug to wipe the sad look off his face. "This will definitely help Dad against those trouble-makers in GZ."
The Spook Sensor goes off, bringing our grandparents running to the view screen in the living room. The mayor appears, his flawless hair sticking out in all directions.
"Jack! Maddie! We need you down at City Hall. We've got an infestation of ghost bats!" One of the creatures swoops down from above, sending the mayor running with a panicked yell.
Maddie narrows her eyes at the fading picture. "I swear, sometimes that man is almost as bad as Vl-" She cuts herself off at Jack's wounded look, shoving a few crumpled bills into Lil's hands. "You kids go ahead and order a pizza. We'll be back later."
Lil's responsibility streak lasts about as long as it takes for the front door to close. "Come on, Bro. Let's go check out the lab."
Dad's old obstacle course is still there. Ceiling hoops and steel walls are nowhere near as challenging as the virtual course we have at home but it feels good to glide for a while. I let Lil take out the cardboard targets with the Portable Ghost Ray so she won't take a shot at me. Maybe I am showing off, just a little.
Lil stares with longing at the Specter Speeder. Dad forbid us from ever going into the Ghost Zone without him but that hasn't stopped my sister from forcing me on adventures.
"Come on, Danny. Don't you ever get tired of running drills? It's not like anybody in there can hurt me and I won't let them near you."
I'm about to remind her of the ghost tiger that almost used me for a chew toy but she's already in the driver's seat. With a sigh, I sink through the roof and settle for the passenger's seat.
Lil starts pointing out the places Dad likes to tell stories about. Skulker's island now holds a stage where Ember can give concerts. They break up about once a week but somehow they always end up together again. The Ghost King's castle sits vacant, a row of skeleton guards standing sentinel at the entry. A few of Frostbite's people offer friendly waves as we pass overhead.
"All right, Lil. You've had your fun but we should really be getting back."
"No way. Not until I see Haunted Canyon. I hear there's a ghost there that knows literally every ghost story ever told."
"If you were that eager to spend time with a know-it-all, you could've just done your homework with Albert."
She sticks out her tongue and increases our speed.
It's not until we pass the giant fridge for the third time that I really start to question my sister's navigation skills. "You're lost."
"I am not lost. I'm just...taking the scenic route."
A ghost slug passes along the ledge to our right, leaving a trail of green slime in its wake. "Very scenic, Sis."
"Fine, ecto-brain. You take the controls for a while."
Turning around is easy enough. Avoiding the shadowy bird the size of a pterodactyl is not. Lil is smirking as I set us down on a ledge covered with a thin layer of green fog.
None of our surroundings look familiar but the cave in the distance that looks like a gaping mouth with giant teeth isn't exactly reassuring. I punch a few buttons, waiting for the computer to recognize the signal for home. Nothing happens. When I try again, the screen goes black.
A figure glides toward us out of the fog, a tall shape with a billowing cloak. Lil is out of the Speeder before I can say a word, arms crossed and scowl in place. "Time blocks are illegal, you know."
The ghost looks like a mix between a thrift store Dracula and a man with serious sleep issues. Only a bloodhound would envy the skin around his eyes. "You are mistaken, child."
"Right. I'm sure our computer, battery, and backup system all just happened to die at the same time."
I don't like the way he's looking at Lil. He's like a cobra in a tuxedo, charming until he chooses to strike. Maybe it's time I made some introductions.
I fly to Lil's side, taking care to keep things friendly. "We're sorry to bother you. Dad asked us to do some surveying but we took a wrong turn at Skull Island. Maybe you could point us in the right direction?"
He stares at me without blinking. "That would hardly make my efforts to bring you here worth the bother."
Lil and I exchange a look. It's not the first time we've dealt with an overconfident ghost. She makes a grab for him while I give him a good blast of ghost ray.
He deflects my shot with ease, catching Lil's hand with a sly grin. "I'm immune to your abilities, Girl. Your father wasn't thorough enough when he went through the lab of Plasmius. His bumbling attempts to better understand our world will give me the key to yours."
Lil grimaces and tries to pull free. He only needs one hand to deflect my strongest blast. We're in trouble but there's no way I'll let Rip van Ugly know that. I've got to keep him talking until I can figure out a plan.
"Ghosts are already in our world. Your kids take classes at our schools and plenty of them hold jobs. What more do you want?"
"I'm so glad you asked. You look much like your father, you know. I've only seen him from a distance, the one who opened the gate to ghostly entertainment acts and spectral humiliations to please the minds of ignorant humans. I'm going to change all that. I'll put my people back to a status of nightmares to be feared rather than features at tourist attractions. Your sister is the key. By draining her essence, I can give ghosts the ability to reclaim a part of their human lives. Even a half-life like yours would be better than to be the puppets of the creatures we once haunted."
A red fog surrounds me, shocking me and draining my powers. I can feel myself transforming, becoming human at the worst possible moment. There's nothing I can do.
Hitting the ground hurts but knowing I'm helpless to save Lil hurts even more.
"I've heard of needing your beauty sleep, but you're about a century behind."
I don't know where he came from, but suddenly Dad is there. Vamp is forced to release Lil in order to fight. He may be able to take down a couple of teens but he's no match for a ghost with twenty years of experience.
"You've won this round, Phantom. This is not the end of the matter. Until we meet again..." Vamp glides back, pausing at the entry to the cave. For a moment, all we can see are his glowing red eyes before he vanishes completely.
We climb in the back of the Speeder as Dad takes the controls. We get the usual lecture about allowing our powers to fully develop and not being too impatient to grow up. We all know Lil will feel guilty for about five minutes and go looking for a new adventure on the sixth.
Mom gives us a hug and a scowl, the surface kind that's hiding the fact that she's proud of us. She's traded in her high school look for a sweatshirt and mom pants but her scarf is patterned with purple skulls and she's still wearing her favorite combat boots after all these years.
Our family reunion is put on hold as Albert comes rushing down the stairs. The ghost that trails him has pencils behind both ears and ink smudges on her dress. "I don't care what they're teaching you at that wretched school! You must show your work!"
Dad and I exchange grins as we leap into action.
