The Baron of Breakfast Platters

A breakfast platter shouldn't be something half-heartedly slapped together.

Such an arrangement should be a work of art.

It doesn't just fuel the needs of the body. Like good poetry, well-prepared food touches something in the soul.

When I was a boy, growing up near one of Earth's first space ports, families mostly relied on cheap food imports. Earth food sold at a premium on rich planets where the people had never tasted chocolate or bacon or a pineapple. Only farmers got a taste of 100% authentic Earth food and even they would give their children nutrition paste half the time to bring in a few more dollars.

My mother insisted on giving me only Earth-grown food despite the cost. I started every day with sunny-side-up eggs, crispy bacon and golden hash browns. It took me years to realize she was wearing herself out at three part-time jobs to keep such a bounty on the table. She sacrificed her health to ensure mine.

I made a vow that my restaurants would serve tasty, filling meals with ingredients grown only on Earth.

The first Cozy Mike's was like an old-fashioned roadside diner...but for spaceships. Rave reviews soon had our tables packed from open to close.

We opened a total of 70 locations within a year, ten on Earth and the rest at various ports.

Within ten years, we had at least one location on every planet within the seven thousand known galaxies.

I was proud of my achievements but be the time Restaurant #21,414 opened its doors, I was looking at five decades. I suppose what happened next was my midlife crisis.

I knew that when I died, my chain would start to deteriorate, as all businesses do. The thought of Cozy Mike's gradually growing lax in its values, of trillions of children being treated to plates of color-injected sludge, horrified me.

I took advantage of a new technology in hopes of cheating death in more ways than one.

I had myself cloned so that every restaurant, no matter how far from home, would have a manager as dedicated to the mission as I could ever be.

I also had my original body locked in a hibernation chamber so that if the technology ever exists to put an end to death, I can take advantage.

Sometimes it gets lonely, drifting in dreams from which I cannot wake. My brain can only link to the clones in a sleepy, detached manner, to give them basic instruction as needed. I am not among the living, not really.

Still...seeing the smiling faces of our zillions of satisfied customers through their eyes soothes my uneasiness and reminds me that my sacrifice is worthwhile.
