Tauren sits hunched in the corner, cringing away from the pellets of hail that clatter to the floor through the cell’s barred window. The dungeon’s ancient stones shudder with each roar of thunder. The light of dawn is a sickly yellow befitting his mood.

The mockery of justice at his trial was surely worse than the punishment to come. This is what he keeps telling himself. Anything to make the agony of waiting easier. The storm eases off enough that he can hear the pounding of hammers assembling the gallows. He buries his head in his hands but sheds no tears. He will not give his captor the satisfaction of seeing him cry.

The latch of his cell door shrieks a protest as it is undone. The jailor is a fat, balding man of imposing height. A leather mask covers his face, giving him the appearance of a beardless boy. He beckons with gloved fingers, offering not one word to console the man who is about to die.

Tauren rises reluctantly, grateful that his shapeless robe hides his trembling knees. It is a short walk past the row of cells to the courtyard. His companions of the past few days bang the bars with tin cups and chicken bones, the only form of support they can offer. He does not have time to do more than glance at them as he is rushed past. He's half-blinded by the glare of the rising sun as his eyes adjust to the light.

He barely hears the taunts of the crowd. He scans their jeering faces, finally locating his father at the edge. The poor old wretch wrings his hands and wails at the sight of his last living son. Tauren’s family once believed themselves better than kings. Not even the royal family can claim sapphires as exquisite as the ones that come from his father’s mine. It matters not. All the wealth in the world cannot placate a demon with a grudge.

Tauren scans the crowd once more as the jailor guides him onto the stage. He's glad to see that his love had honored his last wish. He begged her to stay away as he was ripped from her arms. He winces as he is forced to his knees. The pain of bruises will soon be irrelevant.

His accuser mounts the stage to the delight of the crowd, scanning them with flaming eyes. He recites Tauren’s supposed crimes with chilling accuracy, for in truth they are his own. The crowd chants the name of Voorik as the villain raises his scythe high into the air, calling flame to the edge of the blade with his power.

Tauren looks out on the world with sapphire eyes one last time before closing them in surrender. He can hear the whoosh of flames as the blade begins its descent.

The courtyard shudders with the shock of an explosion. The crate on which his head rests falls to the stage in halves as the blade slices through the wooden platform beneath like a knife through soft butter. Voorik’s enraged snarl echoes across the courtyard as Tauren's rescuer urges her horse to greater speed. He opens his eyes as he recognizes the sweet floral scent of his love. Her auburn hair is braided with tiny white flowers and she wears the green tunic and trousers of a stable hand. The gate guard watches their passage with astonishment, not thinking to do his duty until they are long gone.

They ride through the night, well beyond the boundary line of the untamed forest. There is a cave she knows from her days as a wandering orphan child. She gathered provisions in advance, for she knows they cannot remain there for long.

He takes her by the hand as she dismounts. “I owe you my life though my love was already yours.”

She kisses him sweetly, never letting go of his hand. He can see the sapphire ring he gave her the day before his arrest, his pledge that they would marry. “It is not enough to have you safe. I will help you to prove your innocence, even if it takes the rest of our lives. Your father knew of my plan. He has given us a great cask of jewels for bribes, to aid us in finding proof of Voorik’s lies.”

“You are the only treasure I need.” They stand together and watch the sun rise, its fiery brilliance overpowering the shadows of night as a new day dawns.
