Little Robot, Big Problems

Being a sidekick is mostly awesome. When your leading ladies can smash solid stone to rubble and transform into complex biological organisms at the blink of an eye (to say nothing of the technological genius keeping them in business) life rarely gets dull.

Unfortunately, when you're a portable super-computer with all the myriad emotions of a human programmed into your circuits, you find ways of making mischief even when you're trying really hard to be good.

It's not like Xebo meant to smash the delicate Locator Unit into a trillion microscopic pieces. He was just trying to proclaim his love to Coffee Pot.

Xebo fell in love with Coffee Pot the moment his central chip clicked into place. She is his first and only love. (Despite the fact that the label on her side says Mr. Coffee. Xebo insists the manufacturer misspelled her name. He refers to her affectionately as My Coffee.)

She creates amazing smells that change grouchy humans into nearly civil beings and she always gives off a warm and inviting glow. Xebo has been trying for years to win her affection but so far the only things she's ever said to him are "blub-blub" and "drip-drip".

On the day of the accident, Xebo was all fired up to win the heart of his beloved at last. He had secretly snuck into the pantry the night before and filled a mug with six different kinds of coffee beans...his dear heart's absolute favorite food. He'd also plugged into the main computer and watched every romantic comedy in the video library. (Zeph's guilty pleasure, though he'd never admit as much to the girls.) Xebo had never been more convinced that he now understood the ways of love.

He tried to feed My Coffee her treat but beans just went flying everywhere. He was clearing his throat to sing her the romantic song he'd committed to memory but had to abandon the attempt as full-sized coffee beans became projectiles that sent sketches of the city of Kesho and secret plans for the infiltration of enemy bases flying.

Xebo cowered under the dining table and made a tiny "uh-oh" sound as the Locator Unit that Tec had spent the last month building went crashing to the floor.

Maya and Rowena dashed in with Tec right on their heels. Xebo didn't stick around to hear what they'd say. Luck was on his side. Zeph was just gliding in from a scouting mission, leaving a clear opening for Xebo to scoot through. He could hear Tec yelling for him to come back but he was not some mere robotic gadget that must hear and obey. He was Xebo!

Being bad was fun for a little while but Xebo wasn't built for a life on the run. The sights of Kesho got old pretty fast and there were just too many shady characters that might be the sorts who would throw a burlap sack over an unsuspecting bot and break him down for parts.

Xebo was pondering the best way to make it up to his friends when a familiar smell hit his sensors full force. Coffee beans!

The coffee shop was small and rather out-of-the-way. Only a few of the tables were occupied. A woman in a brown apron was busily squirting whipped cream atop a steaming mug, her back to the door. Xebo zoomed up the counter and ducked beneath the glass display case full of muffins, danishes, and pastries before his presence could be noted.

From his hiding place he could see lines of sleek, silver machines. He felt terribly guilty for even glancing at any coffee pot that was not his own Dearest Coffee Pot. He was convinced that coming into this shop had been a mistake and was about to zoom his way out again when something very special caught his eye.

It was a Locator Unit just like Tec's A little too much like Tec's, in fact. The shady guy in the trenchcoat was shooting glances left and right, then back to the door. He was definitely not someone Xebo knew. The little bot was about ready to go charging up to this stranger blaring heroic tunes and demanding the scoundrel put his hands in the air when the man shifted position. Under the man's bulky jacket was a club dating back to the stone age. Xebo's casing was strong but not quite that strong.

He would need a clever disguise.

A slender white cat came trotting in from the back room. She meowed and twined around the coffee lady's legs.

"Not now, Sugar. Mommy has customers to tend to. You can have your bowl of cream when I'm done."

The coffee lady walked over to a table, glass coffee pot in hand. Xebo looked at the dish of thick cream and smiled.

"Here kitty, kitty."

His voice chip allowed him to do a perfect imitation of the coffee lady. Sugar followed the sound, freezing in place at the sight of the odd-looking hunk of metal hovering over her treat bowl. She arched her back and hissed as Xebo's mechanical arms dropped to either side of the bowl.

The blender whirred to life with gusto. Cream went flying everywhere, splattering the walls with globs of white goo. A very happy Sugar crouched down on the floor and lapped at every speck of cream she could find, ignoring the bot that scooped specks from the walls to shape himself a nice mound that turned his shiny silver body dull white.

The customers looked on with astonishment as an animated cream puff flew the length of the store, snatched the bag of the shady man in the trench coat and whizzed out into evening traffic.

Xebo had a marvelous time dodging cars and pedestrians until the welcome stretches of the Big Forest were in sight. The fat man had fallen way behind. He was no enemy agent with super gadgets and lots of smarts. Clearly, the Bad Guys had sent a small-time criminal to do the job of a mob boss.

So he thought until a sleek figure in a black synthetic suit seemed to spring up out of the ground in front of him.

Xebo did what all great small heroes do when they're terrified.

He bluffed.

His little metal fists went in the air and his wide blue eyes narrowed.

"Put 'em up, bigshot. I can take you!"

The Bad Guy hovered in place, laughing hard enough to make his board wobble. There was no chance of this one losing his balance. He'd be wearing one of the dreaded Power Crystals. Xebo knew he was about to be reduced to scrap metal but he just didn't have it in him to bow his head and surrender.

Then came the most welcome sound in the world. The hovercraft came to rest directly over his location, beaming Xebo directly into its belly.

Tec moved forward to tell Xebo off, falling silent when the little bot meekly handed over the real Locator Unit.

"Oh, Xebo. Why didn't you just tell me the real unit had been stolen?"

Rowena gave Xebo her most winning smile. "Maybe this was a job only Xebo could do. I'll bet it feels nice being the hero for once, doesn't it Xebo?"

Maya rolled her eyes. "You're such a sentimentalist...hey, what is that white dripping stuff?"

Zeph scraped a bit of goo from Xebo's side and gave it an experimental sniff. "I think it's...whipped cream?"

Xebo settled into his charging station as Tec went over his shell with a soft cloth. "Xe-e-e-bo."

It was his means of saying good night. He settled in and shut his eyes, already dreaming about the adorable little Xebo-Coffee Bots he would someday have with Dearest Coffee Pot.
