Evelyn was born during the nastiest part of the war. No human war, the war between Vampires and Lycanthropes had been raging for centuries. However neither race could get a good foothold over the other. Until Michael came to power on the vampire's side. Just five years after her birth, her entire family was slaughtered under Michael's orders. Her pack had been the largest surviving at that point.

She was the only survivor and became a prisoner. Many experiments were run on her body during her imprisonment, but she was treated better than the male prisoners, but only barely.
One day Evelyn snapped, seemingly out of nowhere. She attacked and killed two of her vampire guards on the way to be bathed or experimented on, she didn't know which. She never knew.
A lycanthrope's bite was lethal to vampires, even when in human form as their saliva is what is poisonous to them. So the vampire Michael put her on trial, regardless of the fact she was the only female they had left. He couldn't allow her to walk away unpunished, but his tactic was more to scare her than anything. Also in his mind, he was looking to knock one of his hunters down a few notches, Matteo was getting too cocky, too sure that he was something special. Michael assigned Matteo to 'babysit' his new pet, Evelyn.

Of course Evelyn hated that. But it was a very small relief to her, she was no longer kept in a dungeon cell, because Matteo took her to his home across the world in his anger at Michael for this new assignment. She knew she was probably not strong enough or smart enough to catch such an old vampire by surprise and kill him as she did her guards. Those guards were typically newer vampires, running on emotion and pure new-turned strength. They were easy to out-smart. So she waited. She hoped to use anything she could against Matteo, lure him into feeling safe around her.
This didn't work mainly because Matteo didn't trust her, and he also thought she was gross, an animal. And she didn't think he was a treasure either, a lot of built-up anger was bubbling just beneath the surface for her, anger at his entire species/mutation... But slowly... slowly that seemed to change...

Scene, three months into the new arrangement
Three months... Three months and she was finally beginning to relax, if just a bit. Matteo was smart, he was good at keeping her beneath his thumb, but also at arms-length. He had allowed her a certain amount of freedom, essentially she was free to move about the massive house, but not allowed outside. After all it was just the two of them on the large estate. He wasn't going to give her supervised visits outside. But there were windows! She enjoyed the huge windows immensely, even if she had to pull aside the heavy drapes to see outside. She also enjoyed the indoor-windows that showed her what she figured out were made-up scenarios. Television, Matteo called it, when she finally put aside her bias and hatred enough to ask, as her curiosity got the better of her.
It was through these indoor-windows that she caught up with the world. Things were so different. It was like she had teleported in time, though of course she didn't. She remembered every bit of that long agonizing imprisonment. Things were so different here with Matteo that it felt like she was a different person. Nothing seemed real to her.
Evelyn wandered along the now-familiar hall from her bedroom one evening, absently scratching at the silver band around her neck. It was an invention the vampires came up with, it didn't look like much but it had some kind of spell that kept lycans in their human form. The band was dainty enough to pass for normal jewelry, not quite like a choker, but could not be taken off.
She turned the corner when she got to the end of the hallway that led toward the stairs to see two figures leaning against the wall. It took a moment for Evelyn to process what she was seeing, as they were still a bit far away. The figure up against the wall was a female, human. And the other figure pushing the woman into the wall was Matteo. Evelyn was so startled and embarrassed by what she saw that it took only half a moment to whip around and lightly run back to her bedroom as quickly as she could. Just as she knew that woman was human, she could smell it, she knew what Matteo was doing with her. Food and sex. She knew he liked those two things hand-in-hand, she had this discovered quite early.
Matteo got along with Evelyn quite well, actually. They had essentially come to an unspoken agreement to stay out of each others way. The only other rule in addition to not being allowed outside was that she had to stay in her bedroom on Sundays, which wasn't a hard task as her door was locked routinely at midnight preceding the day. This, as he explained, was the day the caretakers visited the home and cleaned the entire mansion as well as prepared her meals for the week and left blood (ick) in the refrigerator for Matteo. Evelyn guessed he did not want her to try to bribe these people to help her escape or some nonsense. Which she had to admit, was clever of him. So Evelyn rarely saw Matteo unless she wanted to ask him some questions that couldn't be answered by the indoor-window.
She closed the door to her bedroom and leaned back, muttering under her breath about how inconsiderate to be blocking the hallway, her cheeks hot. A few moments later she heard the door a ways down the hall, Matteo's bedroom she presumed, close.
With a soft sigh of relief, Evelyn slipped back out of her room and down the stairs to warm her dinner for the evening. She could read at a first grade or so level, so the cooks generally left her meals that were easy to re-heat in the oven or microwave with very simple instructions on a post-it note on each container.
Tonight she popped the medium-sized container into the microwave and waited. The scent of roast chicken and sprouts filled the kitchen soon, making her mouth water. She couldn't remember eating better in her life. Everything was so good compared to the slop and raw meats that had been tossed on the stone floors of the dungeon at Michael's. Another perk she tallied, puzzling over why Michael would have allowed this arrangement to exist. It was like he was rewarding her. This thought alone kept her up all night some nights and her guard up. Some new torture was sure to lay ahead.
She was still in the kitchen, sitting on a bar stool as she flipped through a magazine when Matteo came into the kitchen smelling of sex and the thick stench of blood. Evelyn stiffened, as she always did in his presence. If he noticed, he didn't show it as he breezed past her to the fridge where he pulled out a bottle of chilled liquor. She had no idea what it was, but it was one of his favorites to drink. He was wearing casual clothes, dark jeans with a dark flannel top, the buttons on the top left open to expose an expanse of pale skin, bare and hairless, well-muscled without being bulky. She could admit he would be attractive if he wasn't a vampire, at least.
"Did your friend make it home?" Evelyn asked coldly, her eyes staying on her magazine. She couldn't help herself, she was getting more bold around him every day. Her irritation must have amused him because he chuckled softly as he poured the liquor into a crystal rocks glass.
"Not that it's any of your business, but yes. You should know by now I don't bring them home if I intend to kill them." he responded, turning to face her as he leaned against the counter. But his light-hearted humor only made her bristle more. She finally looked up at him, her eyes narrowed, but she said nothing. "Oh come now, don't be jealous." he needled, sidling closer to her. "I'm not jealous," Evelyn protested, sitting up straighter on her stool as he neared. His height always made her feel so small, and the fact she was sitting down while he towered above her was not helping this. "You have a complex."
"It's not a complex if it's true," he responded, swirling his drink around in its glass. "You can just tell me, you know. You don't have to sneak around the house in your big shirts and tiny shorts, hoping to lure me in and catch my eye."
Evelyn snorted, even as her cheeks burned, letting her know she was surely blushing for the second time tonight. She hated being so damn easy to manipulate that way, and so easy to read. She pulled down on the hem of her large t-shirt self-consciously. For some reason it hadn't occurred to her that he even noticed what she wore. Then again, she realized, he did in fact purchase all of the clothes she possessed now. Nothing was particularly flattering or fancy, mostly just plain t-shirts and shorts, some jeans and simple undergarments.
"I don't know what you mean." she finally sniffed. "You bought it all for me, it wasn't like I had a choice." Even as she said the words she knew what he was going to say next, as was revealed by his low chuckle.
"I didn't think you'd wear the shorts, to be honest. And you didn't for a long time. What changed, love?" he murmured, oh-so-innocently, close enough now to gently brush her long blonde hair behind her shoulder.
Evelyn shivered and edged away from him, but was already as far as she could get without dropping off her stool to back away. "I don't know what you mean." she insisted staunchly, closing her magazine with a snap. "It's hot." she added defensively, reaching toward the cool kitchen tile with her foot, trying to poise herself to escape. This time Matteo didn't get any closer, but he did drop his hand and lean to the side, propping his hip against the counter.
"If you say so." Matteo answered, his hazel eyes twinkling with mischief over his glass at her while he tipped it back, emptying it. Obviously he knew just being this close to her was making her uncomfortable. He must love making her squirm, it probably made him feel powerful. He set the glass down beside them on the counter with a gentle clack, his eyes never leaving her blue ones.
Evelyn was so sick of his smug grin, his toying with her pushed her over the edge of her own sanity. She couldn't attack him, that would be foolish. She would lose and then she'd either be dead or worse, sent back to Michael. Even if she managed to bite Matteo, the venom was not instantaneous, he would still be able to kill her or send word to Michael before he died. But she was sick of his teasing! So she leaned forward, diverting her foot to push up on the foot-rest of the bar stool so she was standing on that instead of the floor, giving her a boost. At this height she was just below eye-level with him. In a split second she made the decision between head-butting him and instead she pressed her lips directly into his.
Clearly, she had managed to startle him, because Matteo stiffened, his entire body rigid. Then, probably not wanting to let her get the best of him and have the final say, he wrapped his arms around her waist and swung her around until he forced her butt back onto the counter as he deepened the kiss, thrusting his tongue into her mouth. Even so, the kiss only lasted seconds before he planted his hands on either side of her on the counter-top, his eyes level and narrowed with hers.
For a minute neither of them said anything, Evelyn's eyes were dazed ever so slightly, but also puzzled. "Why...did you do that?" she finally stuttered.
"What?" he asked smoothly, pushing himself back from the counter, out from between her legs.
"That was risky for you, with my saliva...and stuff." she said weakly and then rubbed the back of her hand over her lips, still damp from their kiss.
Matteo laughed and shrugged his shoulders. "Only if I had open wounds in my mouth. And you started it. Was it your intention to try to kill me?" he asked her.
"No, actually." she sniffed. "I was hoping to catch you off guard."
"Backfired a bit, didn't it?" he whispered, leaning close again, and like a magnet she backed away, nearly hitting her head on an overhead cabinet. "But you enjoyed it, didn't you?"
Evelyn couldn't help herself, she bit her lip a little before consciously telling herself to stop. "No!" she hissed, narrowing her eyes, but he was already leaning in again, this time kissing her more slowly. And against everything she was, trying so hard to resist him, her will failed. Because it was good. She had never been kissed before, she didn't know what she was doing, but she had a tingling and fluttering sensation low in her belly. She melted into him. Feeling her response, he placed his hands on her thighs, pulling her up against him.
He obviously knew he had her. He knew her history, knew she had been in Michael's captivity since she was young. He knew she was inexperienced . This was the only reason he let the kiss go on, and then firmly, reached to her shoulders and pushed her back, pulling away to look into her face with careful eyes. She couldn't tell what was going on behind those pretty eyes of his, couldn't imagine what kind of thoughts were racing behind them. It was at this point in time that she remembered he had just gotten finished with that human and she abruptly closed her expression, leaning away from him again as she cleared her throat.
Immediately sensing the change in the air, he backed away slightly and she hopped down from the counter and skirted around him. The kiss had awoken something inside of her, but she kept seeing that human and she kept remembering what he had done with her and that he was an enemy.
As if he could see in her face what she was thinking, Matteo reached for her arm to keep her from leaving. She let him grab it but stiffened and averted her eyes.
"Evelyn, I..." he said with a sigh, and she shrugged him off, though her eyes flicked to his at her name. He never used her name, it was always 'you' or 'little dog'.
"It's fine. I um...I need to go to bed." she said, her eyes anywhere but his now. Matteo dropped his hand and stepped out of her path.

Neither of them knew it at the time, but that was the beginning of the end of being enemies for the two of them. Just two weeks later, Evelyn was curled into the corner of the couch in the luxurious living area, watching the indoor-window, her feet tucked beneath her. A funny show was currently running its course.
She told herself to stop monitoring Matteo's movements and happenings about the house, but even so she had noticed he hadn't brought any women home. That bothered her, that she knew that. She tried very hard to disregard it all, to not think about the...the thing that happened in the kitchen a few weeks ago. But stupidly, this little fact kept butting in.
Being a vampire, Matteo kept mostly to a night schedule. He could go out into the sun, she knew, it gave him a headache but he could bear it, so long as he bore a silver somewhere on his person. A ring, she knew. She knew he would be waking up any time now, as it was just past six o'clock p.m. She kept telling herself that any day now he would bring home multiple women, as it was unlike him to go so long without one or two. Usually it was twice a week. But that was before...
She shook her head, berating herself silently as she dispelled the thought. Stop thinking you're something at all to him. Shame on you for even wanting to be! she thought adamantly.
So absorbed into her own thoughts and partially in the television, she hadn't noticed or heard Matteo enter the room. He wore only soft gray sweat pants and a black tank top, his hands in his pockets at his side. His medium length brown hair was messy, sticking up in odd places, not his usual level of grooming when he was around her. Dark circles were apparent against his pale face, speaking of a sleepless night or two. She hadn't even seen him over the past few days. Clearly something was keeping him from sleeping, she thought.
Matteo cleared his throat and withdrew his right hand from his pocket, gesturing to the couch beside her. "Do you mind?" he said gruffly, his voice rough.
Evelyn nearly jumped out of her skin, but covered the reaction smoothly by brushing her hair back from her face. "It's your house." she said softly, afraid to move too much. She hated that her heart was racing just at the sight of him. It was also annoying that she could feel the fluttering again in her belly as her eyes flicked to his body, which was more exposed than she had ever seen it. He sat with half of a cushion separating them, which drove her a little crazy. Matteo pressed his hands between his knees as he turned his eyes to the television.
Neither of them said anything for some time, both sitting rather stiffly in the comfortable couch. Evelyn realized just by feeling the tension, he was as affected by what happened two weeks ago as she was. The thought comforted her only a little. It did cause her to soften enough to clear her throat and turn to him at the next commercial. Feeling her eyes on him, Matteo glanced sideways at her, a small smirk curling the corner of his lips.
"Are you okay?" she asked finally, quirking a brow. "You look like you haven't slept in days."
Matteo chuckled at that and turned his torso to look at her, throwing an arm over the back of the couch as he did. "That would be because I haven't." he admitted freely. "See, I don't know what it is, but I can't stop thinking about the kitchen."
Evelyn pursed her lips and blinked. "I'm not sure why you're so worried about the kitchen. You hardly even use it, really-"
He cut her off with a strangely dark look. "You know what I'm talking about."
Evelyn was taken aback and fell silent. She carefully looked down at her legs folded under herself. Matteo used that moment to scoot closer to her.
"What are you thinking about?" he whispered, using two fingers to lift her chin, forcing her to meet his eyes. "You try to hide it, but I know you can't stop thinking about it either." She pulled her chin from his grasp, but didn't lean away from him. Allowing their eyes to stay locked, she watched as he leaned in. His movements were slow and deliberate. She realized then, that he was doing this to give her time to back away, or tell him no.
But she didn't. She let it happen and she knew she wasn't going to pull away. She even kissed him back.
Finally after what felt like hours, Matteo broke the kiss, his chest rising and falling quickly, his hazel eyes clouded with something Evelyn didn't recognize for she had never seen it on anyone while looking at her. Even so, she knew what he was looking for. Slowly, ever so slowly, she nodded, leaning back toward him to wrap her arms around his neck, resuming their heated kiss.
Lust...that's what it was... and she felt it too... Evelyn let go and let her body take over.
