One little rat, wandering all alone.
Rain drips off his little black nose. Wet and dirty, his tufted ears droop. His tiny paws long since stained black from the dingy streets that are his home. He can only shiver and scurry, snatching at crumbs. He remembers bad, bad things--a blur of motion, black and red, parents and siblings suddenly gone. Every other thought since is running, hiding, and wishing not to be so lonely.
One little rat, finding a book that wanted to be found.
Bound in untreated leather, written in blood, or so they say. Not just anyone can unlatch its metal clasps. Fewer still can read it without losing their grip on sanity. And barely a handful can use the words within to do as the book commands and raise the dead.
Such an innocent mind. He just wants some friends.
Fresh from the grave, with no memories of a previous life, a shambling thing awakens at the rat's eager command. Cold flesh stirs, gradually warmed by animating magic. A cold brain waits, unknowing, for the bloodthirst and flesh-hunger that must surely awaken too. But the little rat, eyes still bright against his grungy fur, does not know what a zombie is supposed to crave. He has only hope. Where rage and hunger should grow in an undead mind, only the undamaged purity of the zombie's master can thrive.
