Most people don't even glance at the dark-haired woman who slips into the inn close to midnight. A few look up, but none of them know her face. Most of them know her name, have heard the tales of the woman who defended a city that turned its back on her. None know that the slim, weary woman taking a seat by the fire is the very same person.

The thunder of boots on wooden floors shortly before dawn wakes half those sleeping in the village inn. Here, a week's travel from the capital city, is usually a peaceful town. The village templars rarely deal with anything more dangerous than wolves or bears. Mages don't come here, you see. Not here, so close to the heart of the Chantry in Val Royeaux. They never get this far.

A few faces peer out from doors cracked open as three templars drag the dark-haired woman from the previous night down the halls and out of the inn. Fewer still are watching out the windows when she seems to explode into a ball of flame. One templar falls to the ground immediately; the others draw their blades. But she's gone, as impossible to grasp as smoke rising from a candle.

Several days later, as templars whisper among themselves, a rumor grows within the village. That was Hawke.
