A character by Jane
Sid was a possum.

An ugly possum.

And that made Sid pretty grumpy, because nobody liked ugly possums.

There didn't seem to be any love in the world for Sid. He'd been chased by dogs, struck by thrown shoes, and thought often about placing himself under the wheels of a car.

One night, he caught the smell of one of his favorite snacks drifting through a catflap attached to the door of an old house: buttered popcorn. And he found he could not resist poking his dirty face through the catflap for a closer look.

Preparing a bowl of popcorn was Maggy - a very large woman in a very nappy nighty with an enormous, greying beehive. She had also lost her glasses last Tuesday.

She squinted down at Sid and smiled. "Fluffy! There you are! You're just in time for Wheel of Fortune."

Sid was stunned. No one had ever smiled at him before, save for the brat down the street who took aim at him with a BB gun. But he soon decided he would be anything for Maggy as she coaxed him inside her home and showered him affection and offerings of popcorn and other tasty treats. He even got to sit on the couch.

Life with Maggy was wonderful. They spent most of their time just like this: watching Wheel of Fortune or The Price is Right with a bowl of some salty snack. Occasionally, she would knit as they watched television, other times he'd sit in her lap as she stroked his fur. Sid had finally found his home - even if he was under the guise of a household cat.

That is, until he found Maggy's glasses.

They were no doubt hers, with their exaggerated red frames and hiding place between two couch cushions.

His immediate thought was to take the glasses and bury them in the yard. But the more he plotted, the more he realized how haphazardly Maggy was living her life in her little home with her glasses missing.

He had to return them to her.

Sheepishly, he approached Maggy's seat on the couch, her glasses held carefully in his teeth. Teeth she would no doubt find ugly, in a face she would no doubt find repulsive.

Sid placed Maggy's glasses in her lap.

"What-? Oh! Oh, thank you!" she exclaimed, astounded by his gift. She put the glasses on and looked down at Sid, who was quietly making his way to the catflap before her slipper came flying for him.

But to his surprise, Maggy didn't throw her slipper. In fact, she scooped Sid up and covered him in kisses!

"What a silly, old woman I am! I haven't owned a cat in sixteen years!" she laughed. "Thank you so much for spending your time with me, you dirty, little possum. My, I can't wait to tell the girls at bingo! I'll be the only broad on the block with a possum!"

Maggy and Sid have lived happily together ever since. They still watch their favorite shows together with a bowl of fattening snacks - and Maggy still calls Sid "Fluffy" sometimes.

But Sid is willing to be anything for Maggy.
