The air inside the second room in the Biophysical Hazard Wing is, indeed, as stuffy as the teamaker had warned it would be. The interior, although lit by an intensely warm glow, seems strangely stark, with a small table near the door providing the only break in the bare walls and floor. Sensing no immediate danger from the ball of red-orange fur huddled in the far corner of the room, you move closer to the lone piece of furniture, wondering if the creature has noticed your presence, or if it is even awake.

The table, a battered metal stand with folding legs, holds a surprising assortment of delicate items and figurines that appear to have been carved out of ice. Wondering how they hold their shape in a room roughly the temperature of a furnace, you reach out to touch one, but jerk your hand back abruptly when the creature lifts his head.

“Be careful,” he growls softly, but the warning seems almost friendly, and he makes no further movement toward you. His voice has a deep, scorched roughness, with a hint of crackling flames under the surface.

“You’re welcome to stay for as long as you like,” he adds after a few moments of silence, “although I’m afraid I don’t have much to interest you. Other than my ice sculptures, of course. I suppose it doesn’t really matter if you touch them; they won’t last long, anyway. They never do.” At this, he sighs, and the flames around him flicker fitfully, creating a rush of heat that laps at the edges of the suddenly constricting room. “They’re more of a test than a decoration, and I’ve begun to wonder if it’s even making a difference. The doctor brings by a new set every few days, tracks how long it takes for them to melt, and adjusts my treatments. Lately, he’s just been sending an assistant with them, which makes me wonder…” He trails off, almost seeming to forget that he was speaking aloud. This seems to be a conversation that he has often held with himself, without reaching any solid conclusion.

Although it seems intrusive, you can’t help feeling curious about his condition and how he came to the hospital. He does not appear to be offended by the question, but the note of loneliness in his voice increases. He rests his chin on his paws again, his amber eyes fixed on something far in the distance. “Nothing survives around me—at least, nothing I care about. I was born this way—created from fire—but at first, I didn’t mind so much. I learned to keep my distance. After a while, though, it gets exhausting. Not being able to touch anything or anyone…knowing that you’re a danger to others, that anything you do might hurt someone you care about. I came here because my creator said he couldn’t fix me. Well, more precisely, he said that I didn’t need fixing, so there was no point in trying. But if I was so perfect, if I didn't need fixing, then why didn't he create more like me? I was an early experiment, before he’d begun working with safer, more controllable materials, ones that it wasn’t safe for me to be around.”

You automatically glance at the items next to you. The ones farthest from the door have visibly softened, with beads of moisture pooling on the table’s surface. You’re beginning to have trouble breathing and know you’ll need to move on soon, perhaps even before he has finished answering your question.

“This hospital’s visible from the cottage. I used to watch it at night, seeing the windows lighting up, the rows of patients with their illnesses being cured. I thought that the doctor would be able to cure me. I hoped he would. Now I’m not sure whether I made the right choice. I lose track of time in this room, but as far as I can tell, I don’t seem to be getting any better."

“Do you hear that?” he asks abruptly, interrupting his own story, as though he is tired of telling it. You focus your attention on the hallway and realize that a strange, faint collection of sounds has been filtering into the back of your consciousness for the past several minutes, growing increasingly louder. “It’s coming from another wing. It starts at about the same time every day. I don’t know what it is, exactly, but it sounds like fun.” A low whine escapes from the back of his throat, and as you look back at him, you see that his fiery paws are twitching, as though he is struggling to remain still. There’s a sudden, puppyish look to him that you hadn’t noticed before.

“My name is Siyafa,” he calls after you as you turn to leave the room, your breathing too labored to allow you to remain any longer. You look back, pausing in the doorway. He has risen to his feet for the first time, his tail waving softly, scattering sparks around the room. “Maybe…in a little while, after a few more treatments, I’ll be able to play. Maybe you’ll come back then?”
