THE GAME

____________________________________________

“No one wants to play your lame sports games!” another boy said. How many times had Bruce heard these words? He kept asking people over, trying to make some friends at his new school, but ever since his first game party, no one had wanted to come.

“I’ve got the newest ones this year though!” replied Bruce, but it really didn’t matter. Everyone ignored him and continued through the lunch line. He had been in this situation too many times in the past to keep arguing.

He knew what the problem was; everyone just wanted to play the shooting games. Call of Duty and Battlefield were all people ever talked about. All he had though were Nintendo consoles, and all the multiplayer games he loved just didn’t sound appealing to anyone else. Maybe his games were too childish? Maybe everyone else just loved the killing or the battles? Bruce really didn’t know. He wished so much his parents had gotten him something other than all those stupid Nintendo systems.

Sure, it was fun exploring the dungeons of Zelda, or beating the latest Mario levels, but it got so lonely playing alone! People don’t like watching someone else play while they sit there bored. "If only he could find the right game…" He thought to himself.

That night on his walk home, he passed by the local video game store again. He browsed through the shelves, game by game. It was almost summer break and he had to have something new help him through the summer alone. He looked longingly at the racks of Playstation and Xbox games, but the prices of the consoles below the games reminded him how out of reach they were. Maybe he would bring it up to his parents again at dinner? Bruce gave a heavy sigh as he walked out; he already knew what they would say.

While finishing his walk home, he went through every possible scenario he could think of to try to have answers for his parents’ arguments against a new console. It really didn’t matter; at supper his parents said the same thing they always did; they just didn’t have the money. Bruce begged and begged, explaining how bored and lonely he was going to be this summer if he didn’t have friends. His parents promised him they would try to get the money together for one game, but that they just couldn’t afford a new console.

The next day after school, Bruce stopped by the game store again to see if he could find the game he’d be playing this summer. After ten minutes of Bruce flipping over games and reading the summary on the back, a store employee walked up and asked, “Anything I can help you find today?”

Bruce sighed and said, “Not unless there’s a Call of Duty game on Nintendo now that other people will like.”

“Can’t help you there” said the employee, “but maybe your friends might enjoy the Super Smash Bros game coming out next week?”

“Super Smash Bros?” said Bruce, who had never heard of the game before. He had never known anyone else who owned a Nintendo console after all.

“Yeah!” said the employee. “It’s a multiplayer fighting game with all the best Nintendo characters. It’s really popular actually; I’m surprised you’ve never heard of it before!”

Bruce stared at the display. “A multiplayer fighting game…” he whispered quietly to himself. Maybe this would be the one? He thanked the employee and walked out. He sprinted the rest of the way home, scaring his mother half to death as the bolted through the door.

Out of breath, he tried to explain the new game to his mother. She didn’t seem to understand him, but told him they could go check it out as a family the next week.

The next week was one of the most agonizing weeks of Bruce’s life. He knew his parents would have to examine the game before they would agree to get it for him, as they were very protective.

Finally, the release day arrived. Bruce heard nothing the teachers said that day, as he was staring at the clock. When the bell rang he sprinted home, beating everyone else out of the school. He spent the next half hour begging his mom and dad to go with him to the store. At long last, they got into the car and drove to the store.

Bruce showed his parents the display with the new game lining the shelf. The same employee from last week came over and explained the game to his parents. They looked at the rating, and quietly discussed it between themselves. Then his dad said to Bruce “Are you sure this is the one you want?”

“Yes, I am!” Bruce almost shouted.

They paid for the game, and drove home. That night Bruce got his first experience with Super Smash Bros. He knew the other kids at school would want to come over now. He knew they would love this new game.

The next day at school, Bruce tried talking to the other guys again. He explained his new game, telling them everything about it. This time however it wasn’t a sports game he was talking about. A few of the other guys agreed it sounded pretty cool. He asked them if they wanted to come over that night and try it out, and they agreed.

After supper that night the doorbell rang, and the other three guys were there at the door. They came in and went with Bruce down to the basement, where they turned on the game. After hours of gaming, they were all laughing and joking together. One game had brought a whole group of people together. They all left as friends, with plans to do it again the next night. From that day forward, all of Bruce’s friends called him… “Smash”
