"A what? Where?"

"An island! A giant island, right there in the distance. Straight ahead of us."

"Hmmmmmmnnn...!"

He raises an ink-stained hand to shield his violet eyes from the sun. He scans the horizon, apparently looking straight through the hulking landmass looming out of the ocean. The giant lotuspad you both stand on smeks wetly underfoot as he paces back and forth. He narrows his eyes. "Are you sure you know what an island is, buster? I only see a whole lotta sea, and also a whole lotta... no-islands. Noilands. Is that a wor-- nevermind, it is now. Maybe you saw a whale. They don't like this coast much, but I saw a real big one once. It was alone, and swimmin' pretty slow, so I had lots of time to draw it." He gestures to an adjacent lily pad, covered in blue squiggles that in no way look like even the most abstract of whales. "So majestic," he whispers to himself.

"It's not a whale, it's... right there. It's huge. You can't see it either? No one else can spot it, I swear I'm about to... Look! Something on it is smoking! I think that biggest mountain is a volcano? Surely the creatures around here would know about a nearby active volcano."

He looks at you, his wide face contorted halfway between disbelief and concern. With both hands he raises a pencil crayon up to his eye like a telescope, clearly at a loss for how else to humour you.

"Buck-o, I don't see nuffin'. Definitely no volcano island. If you're sure it wasn't a whale, then maybe you saw a... Hmm. I guess? No. Hmmmmm." He taps a froggy foot with a plap plap plap plap. "Maybe you saw a... cloud? Sure! Those can look like any dang thang! I saw a cloud once that looked just like-- wup! Ahh! OH NO!" he yells as the pencil crayon pops from his hands like a bar of soap. It arcs gracefully then lands in the water with a splash and immediately sinks into the murk.

"Drat it all! I needed that one! And not even just for telescopin'! Purple is her favorite. She's going to look stupid without any purple!" He gestures to another lily pad covered in what looks like a drawing of tangled yarn.

Feeling guilty about the pencil crayon you inadvertently helped lose, you inquire about this other... drawing.

"Hup! What do you MEAN 'who is She'? What are you, new to this planet? A freshly hatched babyman? She's obviously Akatea of the East. And not to brag," he says, bragging, "but it's a really good interpretation of Her. I bet my number one fan would agree. Or at least it WILL be a good interpretation, once I add some flappin' purple! UGH."

He grumbles and fishes a hand down into the water, trawling back and forth through the reeds and the mud until-- "AHA!" He pulls his skinny arm out triumphantly, grasping a filthy pink pencil crayon. "You can't skedaddle that easi--wait WHAT? PINK?! You're not the right... I don't even remember losing that one! Who even likes that colour, anyway!" He scowls (or, more accurately, does something adorable with his face you assume was intended to come out as a scowl) and tosses it back in.

"Anyway where was I. You asked me to explain a thing. Oop, I got it. It's Akatea. Her Pauan legend is my favorite. Tell me you've at least heard of Paua? She's a goddess who lives on the beach, and controls all beaches and coasts, and one of her beaches always has a big party on it, except everyone at the party is a monkey. Hear me, guy? Some of them monkeys fly kites, and some of them have races on giant crabs, but some of them just roll around on the ground and-- hey, wait. This island you think you see. Does it have monkeys?" For the first time in the conversation he seems genuinely interested.

"Uh. Maybe? It's too far away, I can't tell."

"Oh," he says dejectedly. He looks out at the ocean again. "Well I still don't see any little bit of it. Your eyes must be better than mine. Are you gonna go there, d'ya think? If you do, and there's a monkey party, it's Paua! You have to come back and tell me. RIGHT AWAY. You have to PROMISE ME. Paua doesn't come around here very often, at least that's what the legend says, and I wanna draw monkeys. Monkeys love my drawings." You assume his monkeys probably wouldn't look that different from his whales, but he's been mostly pleasant so you promise anyway.

"Okay. Good, good. Oh, and if you meet Akatea," he begins, hesitantly, "you should tell her to come see my drawing. If she's not too busy. I bet she'll think it's really good and then I'll autograph it for her. But tell her to wait a couple days until I find my purple. UGHHH."

You follow the lily pad path toward the island, each footstep a wetter and wetter smek. You hear a faint voice from behind you.

"A...HA! Wait... what? PINK? ANOTHER ONE?" followed by a resounding ploonk.
