Melipona has always been inquisitive by nature. She's always wanting to figure out what something is, how it works, why it has to work, if she could make it better. At times this has been useful to her and her colony, but at other times it hasn't worked so very well. It was this nature that was eventually her downfall.
While traveling through the Arctic Frost with her colony, Meli's eyes wandered around the vast expansion of white to keep herself from going mad with boredom. Soon after entering the Polar Ice Fields, she spotted an strange object protruding from the snow. The object's sharp contrast against the white of the land was enough pull the her away from the huddling flock of Bumbus' to investigate. It was... a cookie? 'How strange,' she thought, 'What is a cookie doing all the way out here?' Meli's colony was moving on, hardly noticing that one of their own had failed to keep up with them. She knew that she should just leave the curious artifact, but it wasn't in her nature to leave something so interesting alone. So she didn't. Instead, she hoisted the cookie up and buzzed aimlessly around the ice fields for some reasonable explanation for the frozen cookie. Several hours went by and Meli began to think that she had made a mistake. First Meli had been forced to abandon her mysterious frozen cookie when a viscous white beast surprised her, then while dodging into the snow to hide from the frightening creature a metallic handle of some sort clung to the warmth that remained in her little arms. Under normal circumstances Meli would have been ecstatic to have come across such an interesting piece of an obvious puzzle, but this just wasn't normal. She was tired, cold, frightened, had a piece of metal stinging and clinging to one of her tiny mid-section arms, and wanted nothing more than to return to the warmth that her colony had provided. Hopeless and sleepy, Meli continued to wander the vast white field until she came upon a section of snow that was higher than the rest and provided a shelter from the freezing winds. She nestled against a strange metallic pail and closed her eyes- not even bothering to rejoice in finding the partner to the metal that was stuck to her arm. She didn't care anymore, not now when the future looked so terribly bleak, not when sleep sounded so amazing.
So she slept. And sometime later that's where she was found, curled and shivering against the bucket of polar ice water with frost formed over her closed lids. The girl who found the near-frozen bumbus, Timid, carried the poor thing along with the bucket to the healer in hopes of reviving the hypothermic pet. The Healer worked her magic and did what she could for Meli, but the bumbus continued to shake and snuggle into the warmth of Timid's chest. Upon the Healer's suggestion, Timid ventured to the city to purchase the missing ingredient needed to create a Glacier Potion- a potion that would keep the bumbus from succumbing to the effects of the hypothermia. It worked, and several days later Meli was able to leave the Healer's home with the girl that had found her to join a new colony of sorts.
Within the next few days, Melipona became infatuated with one of the residents of her new home, Miinxii. This new creature was patched together like a ragdoll, with two bolts sticking from her neck and a short rod from her head that Meli swore she saw sparking. Miinxii was like a gift made especially for the bumbus to examine. The patch-work rabbit was less than thrilled when she found out that she was the object of the new-comers fascination, though her only attempts to make her disapproval evident where tiny firecracker-like bombs placed around Meli's lab. After some time, Miinxii became more accustomed the unorthodox form of companionship that the bumbus provided and allowed the other the view her more closely. Melipona rejoiced at this and began to spend most of her waking moments taking notes and running experiments based upon her new 'friend'. Since then she's taken to trailing after the other girl as though she were the colony that she had lost.
