(skeletons on the horizon)

this is me throwing up words and ideas everywhere

Rain -- virus inside droplets. People breathe in as clouds stir overhead.

Skeletal buildings, metal framework jutting out like the angles in a gaunt, bony animal. rising sun casts sharp, harsh glints of light across them, sunlight scattering across the remains of wire and titanium. the scene is eerily poetic.

run, eat, kill.

survive.

a pale hand, fingers curled inward towards the palm, amidst the stone and rubble. a boy.

long, dark corridor, sharp staccato of footsteps against the reflective flooring, shadows dancing and flittering on the walls as their silhouettes pace by.

a small room, with a single window covered by dark shades. orange light from the waning sunset filters through, casting horizontal segments of light against the hard floor. dusty crates, twisted nails and large, splintered chunks of wood, are stacked haphazardly against one wall, while a desk against the other and metal filing cabinets in the corner.

cure -- dark liquid painted black, thick in the syringe like syrup and dotted with flecks of white that shimmer like stars.

he didn't believe in monsters.

stories of dark shapes and fleeting shadows left him unperturbed as a child. unlike his brother, he never woke in the night with hoarse cries, dripping in cold sweat and shaking limbs.

he didn't believe in monsters. but the first time he'd seen one--

(dark, twisted hands.)

(black teeth stained with blood, like tar.)

(glistening flesh, the smell of rot.)

(sick, sloppy crunching.)

-- the nightmares had come. crying out into the darkness as he was wrenched from his horrible dream, he'd dropped his head to the side and retched, sour bile and acid heavy on his tongue. in his ears, his heart drummed a panicked plea.

terrified and shaking, he did not sleep that night. he let insomnia take him for many weeks, fearing that he would wake up to rotting, twisted hands clawing at his flesh, ripping muscle from sinew and bone; to putrid breath choking him, filling his lungs with acrid bile.

now, though, he knows no fear. he crushes their skulls and pierces their hearts before they can pierce his. he knows his prey like a mother knows her child.

flashback:

the virus begins to infect people. series of incidents which involve cannibalism and nakedness.

man pulled over for erratic driving. fails sobriety test, placed in back of cop car, agitated and enraged, and spits an entire mouthful of blood in the face of the arresting officer.

VIRUS DETAILS (jargon-y)

hysteria as scientists discover a new viral infection, spread by salival contact with an open wound--the deeper the wound, the higher the risk, especially if it enters muscle. virus attacks the body and the brain, integrates into the telomeres of human chromosomes which stimulates the virus into a second phase: alters brain activity in a form of incomplete brain death, disabling the higher functions of the brain(the cortex) leaving behind the mechanical and motor controls of the limbic system. small, very small amount of memory function, but purely instinctual--long term implicit memory (can remember how to move around and basic motor skills like eating) but lack coherent consciousness or higher functions. no explicit longterm (semantic/episodic memory gone) or short term/working memory. infection in the blood stream is much like septicemia -- infection of the bloodstream, except it isn't bacterial.

stage 1: depending on how deep the wound is, symptoms take a while to start showing. deeper wounds: within minutes or even seconds, shallower ones or grazes can take up to ten days. septicemia-like thing, high fever, migraine, chills, hallucinations, nausea, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate (mostly due to septicemia). this stage lasts for several hours and is curable.

stage 2: confusion, memory loss, aggression (lash out and attack, cause minor injury to others), loss of coordination and cognitive function (limited ability to understand and speak due to infection of nervous system), phlebitis (inflammation of walls of veins leading to an increase in varicose veins (twisted, enlarged at the surface of the skin) causing darkening of skin, also bc of septicemia the blood cells start to get darker, blotchy bc blood rushes towards internal organs and away from skin. not curable. lasts for several days. scoptophobia - fear of being seen.

stage 3: loss of hair, no sweating, high aggression (consumption of flesh), severe amnesia, total loss of cognitive function, red spots on the skin (petechiae) as blood vessels break and clot, change in internal homeostasis -- retain water and do not sweat. water efficient, but they can die without moisture. without bulk of brain functioning, energy requirements are lowered. at this point, the infected have blotchy patterns on skin -- dark, white patches and red blots from vessels, ashen skin color and black veins. they are still human, however, and can be killed like any other human: dehydration and starvation.

PLOT CONT'D

finds dresden in the rubble, and takes him back to shelter (boarded up inn with metal slates). he's severely injured. deep gash in shoulder, left arm broken or fractured from the unnatural angle it's twisted in -- his skin is ashen white, almost grey, and the white of the bone that peaks out from under the matted layers of dyed red cloth makes trevor's skin crawl. bruises on torso from being crushed under stone, cuts on legs, sprained ankle.

disinfectant, stitches. antibiotics given to help with wound. dresden sleeps on the single bed with two thin fleece blankets and a rag over his head to calm his fever, while trevor piles a bunch of tattered cloth on the floor to sleep. it's september, and starting to get chilly. zombies will get slower due to the frost that settles on their limbs.

helps dresden recover, goes on a food raid while he is doing so to accommodate for the extra mouth to feed. water, but canned and dry/dried foods

when he wakes up, threatens "you better not have gotten bitten, or i'll blow your brains out" but it's just an empty threat bc if he was the symptoms would have already set in. dresden has a notebook full of shit that he researched on stages, on the cure which he knows is in a research center which was never distributed to the public and had only been tested by the government minimally before being abandoned bc the outbreak was too severe, and is amazed to find out trevor knows nothing about the stages and that he's survived this long without knowing anything. "what good did it do you?" trevor bit sarcastically, remembering the paler man's body, broken and sprawled out across the hard pavement. he's more gut instinct than knowledge, and this book is out of his element -- he flips through the yellowed pages haphazardly before tossing it back to dresden.

(dresden thinks shit through and trevor's more of a blow shit up and kill shit type of guy)

can reveal details about stages and shit here! also dresden talks about how antibiotics won't work because this is a viral infection, not a bacterial one, even though the infection in the blood seems similar to the workings of bacteria.

blah blah
