the well of lost things

Cici suspected that she was the only one that knew about her glade. It was well hidden behind a thicket of ancient oak trees deep in the forest. She herself had only stumbled upon it accidentally, having taken a wrong turn while hiking and ending up hopelessly lost. She had eventually found a small stream, and hoping it would take her to civilization she had followed it. After a day of walking and no success, she had come upon a thicket and decided it would be an ideal place to rest for the night.

While she was dozing off, she heard a plink coming from deeper in the trees. She normally wouldn't worry herself about the small noises around her, but this had sounded distinctly metallic. She decided she would put out her fire- just in case- and wait until morning to investigate. She nestled down into her makeshift bed once again.

She woke the next morning having slept fitfully. She had been woken by plinks several times that night. She decided it was light enough to explore the thicket further.

Eventually she had found herself in the glade. A small spring burbled happily in the center, while oaks guarded the perimeter. But the ground was covered in junk. Plastic, paper, metal... Anything you could imagine. And as she looked around, a key bubbled up out of the spring and landed with a plink on the pile of junk.

Items continued to pour out of the spring steadily. She spent days looking idly through the piles of junk. She found all sorts of things- hundreds of keys, all sorts of jewellery, socks, letters, household bits and bobs. She couldn’t figure out how all the items were connected, or where they were coming from.

Little did she know that she had found a Well of Lost Things, a place where the small things people lost on a day to day basis turned up. These existed all over the world, but could only be found when stumbled across on accident. Cici would find this out later, but long after she had left the well and found her way home. She often went back to the forest and attempted to find the well again, but this proved to be a fruitless task.

The Well of Lost Things was lost to her.
