“Hey, you! Freeze!”

Freeze sighed. Not again.

The world around him stopped. Everything but Freeze came to a complete standstill, looking like a scene out of a paused movie.

It would only last thirty seconds, but if he timed it right, that was enough to make a getaway.

He raced around a corner, out of the view of the bank security officer who would no doubt be rumbling after him. Taking a quick look around, he decided to bolt down an alley that would take him to the crowded main street.

He had made it to the edge of the crowd when his time ran out. He pushed his way through, and disappeared. Shouts in the distance were the only evidence left behind from his crime.

Freeze hadn't always been a thief, oh no. When he had first discovered his power he had been determined to put it to good use. He’d had a sidekick and everything, one who would run alongside him, primed and ready to shout “freeze!” whenever it was needed. He’d used it to buy precious seconds in fires, building collapses, traffic accidents, you name it. In those seconds he would do whatever he could to divert the problem.

But no one seemed to care. Maybe it was selfish of him to expect some accolades for his good deeds, instead he got a visit from the cops wondering how, exactly, he always managed to be at the scene of major disasters. No one believed in his powers, and they began making him see a doctor for his delusions.

One day, in a therapy session, he had snapped. His therapist had kept on saying his name, each time unknowingly pausing time for him. He couldn't take it anymore.

When the therapist had said his name for what seemed like the hundredth time, and time stopped, he got up, walked over to a cabinet of knick knacks in a corner, and grabbed a gold paperweight before leaving.

He’d started out small, just taking the occasional item for fun. But it turned out he was awfully good at crime. His old sidekick didn't agree with what he was doing, so taught a minion how to say his name on command instead. It was helpful for getting in and out of scenes quickly and tidily. Security cameras couldn't catch him as they would freeze for thirty seconds along with everything else.

He now enjoyed his life of villainy far more than he had his life of heroics. Papers often ran stories about him now, and while they weren't particularly complimentary, the media did seem to be somewhat in awe of his heists as they had gotten more and more elaborate.

Which had led to his latest bank robbery. It wasn't as if he needed money any more, he had been able to get more than enough already. But this bank had taunted him in the papers, claiming that even he couldn't get past their defenses.

So, he’d set to mapping out their security. He knew the location and range of each security camera and where exactly his minion would have to freeze time for him. He knew the guard’s rounds so that he could hide or sneak through doors behind them. Once in the vaults, well, it was just a simple case of lockpicking, a skill he had picked up back when he’d still been trying to rescue people.

It had hardly been a challenge. The hardest part had been at the end, trying to act suspicious enough to catch the eye of the security guard. He wanted the alarm to be raised and for the bank to know they were beaten.

And now it was over. He had melted away into the crowd, his pocket bulging with a gold bar and his minion running alongside.

It was time to start planning the next heist.
