Roderigo has a minion!

Sebastian the Incendo

As nighttime fell, Roderigo began to prepare for his work. As the moon began to rise, he closed his eyes and shifted into the world of dreams. He didn’t know how he was able to slip into this other world, but it was something he had been able to do ever since he was a child. He opened his eyes and looked around at the swirling void he now floated in.

Even after all of his visits, the world of dreams was still overwhelming. Thousands of colours swirled around him, constantly fluctuating. At the center of each swirl was the subconscious of someone who was currently dreaming. He had a general idea of what each dream was by the colour and power of a swirl.

Roderigo’s job was to nudge specific dreams in certain directions. He never knew who a dream belonged to or what the reason for the adjustment was. He would only know what he had to do when he came upon a particular swirl and felt the familiar tugging sensation pulling him in. He carried with him a small knife in a pouch that he would use to cut open a dream. He would then be able to extract parts of the dreamer’s subconscious or insert new thoughts. These fragments of ideas could be stored in his mind or in a physical form.

He floated towards a swirl that had suddenly appeared in front of him. A sudden knowledge of the dream and how he was to adjust it came to him, and with that, he knew his work had begun. He shifted himself closer- this was the most dangerous part. As he got closer to the center of a dream, he would begin to feel the emotions coming from it. Too close, and he would get sucked in. No one had ever returned from entering a dream, and he could only guess what happened to those that had gotten trapped. Likely, they winked out of existence with the rest of the dream when the sleeper was awakened.

Hovering just on the edge, ignoring the emotions tugging at him, he made a quick slice with his knife. A black cut appeared in the swirl, and with his mind he reached in and felt around for the threads of the dream. He spent some time prodding the threads to find the right one, just... there. He gave it a tug. It loosened easily and he pulled it towards him. As it passed through the cut, it transformed into a sentient flower-like being. It floated out of the center of the swirl and he grabbed it. He stuffed the flower into his pouch.

At this point, he needed to work quickly before the cut in the dream closed. He reached into his own mind for a fragment and channeled a black mist towards the swirl. It solidified into a black cobra and disappeared as it passed into the dream. Job done, Roderigo shifted away.

He always wondered why sometimes he had to remove the good from dreams and insert bad. It seemed unfair since there was no defense against his manipulations. Still, it was his job. He had to hope that what he did was for a greater good.

After a long night of work, he returned to his home. He could see the sunlight filtering in behind his curtains and could smell breakfast cooking. He reached into his pouch and pulled out the flower-being he had smuggled out. He would introduce it to the other dream fragments that he had snuck from the dream world. Perhaps someday he would be able to use them to figure out the purpose of his work.
