The first rainbow flag was created in 1978 by artist/activist Gilbert Baker after being challenged by politician/fellow activist Harvey Milk to create a symbol of pride for the gay community. The dyeing process used to make the early flags was created by Lynn Segerblom. Where the idea to use a rainbow as that symbol came from is not entirely clear; it has been suggested that it comes from the song "Over the Rainbow" (as sung by Judy Garland in the film The Wizard of Oz) or as an adaptation of an earlier multicoloured flag known as "the Flag of the Races" that represented racial tolerance and world peace. The first rainbow flag was flown at that year's Gay Freedom Day Parade in San Francisco, California.

The flag's original design had eight stripes, but the hot pink and turquoise stripes were dropped in the late 1970s. A recent variant of the rainbow flag, created in 2017 in Philadelphia, includes black and brown stripes at the top to show solidarity with and inclusivity of people of colour.

Many of the communities included under the LGBTQA+ umbrella have created their own specific pride flags, including lesbians, bisexuals, transgender people, asexuals, and pansexuals. Most of these are striped similarly to the rainbow flag, but others (such as the intersex or demisexual flags) use different designs.

Each colour of the rainbow flag carries a specific meaning.
