The Conflicted One

Although high above the main deck in the crow's nest, the mallarchy's cry carried clear across the air so that the entire crew of The Wayward Dog heard.

"Captain! Brig off o' Port! 'Bout five leagues ter der horizon!"

They peered anxiously over the side of the boat off into the distance. Moments later, the door to the Captain's quarters opened wide. A jackal with a long flowing tail reminscent of bright green jelly and eyes they glowed like embers stepped out onto the main deck with his spyglass in hand. He was an outcast of sorts like his brother, an expirement created without purpose or a name. He had given himself both.

Arturo extended his spyglass and peered in to distance at what the rest of his crew was straining to see. He spotted the brig as it bobbed lazily in the water on the horizon. It was a good sized vessel baring Shengui flags. A brig that size could have a belly full of fine silks and other exotic goods that would bring a good bounty.

Sergio, his beloved black salamander, hopped from his shoulder to perch on the captain's wheel like a hood ornament. Arturo turned the spokes on the wheel to change their course. He barked out orders and four crewmates immediately set to work adjusting the sails. A large ocean breeze caught the newly positioned sails, causing them to swell as they knocked into place. The Wayward Dog tore through the rolling waves at full speed like a shark chasing after it's prey. The clear blue sea was disturbed with white seafoam left in the ship's wake.

Arturo peered down the spyglass again and noted how the brig was slow to move. Her hull must be bloated with goods, hopefully expensive ones. She was unaware of the unsolicited attention she had drawn. There were at least a dozen trade routes between the Omen Islands and Shengui Guo. All were bustling with traders and pirates. The routes were patrolled by Republic Enforcement ships, but the ocean between the two islands was vast vast and not all ships could be protected. Piracy was always a risk all traders took if they wanted to make a livelihood.

The crew began to hoot and holler with excitement when their target was fully visible to the naked eye. Arturo checked their course on his compass. It was an odd route. They were traveling further south as if heading to Shadowglen. The Shengui brig must have tried to avoid detection by taking an obscure route. Her mistake was his silver lining. It had been a long time since he saw a large trading vessel without an escort. This could be the job was hoping for. One last job, then he could find his brother.

How many times had he made this false promise to himself? How many times would be the last time? All the men on The Wayward Dog were broken men with broken dreams and mouths to feed. He had built them up and given them purpose again. In return, they plundered and fought in his name. They would follow him to the cold, dark depths of the Omen Seas if he only asked.

These were his men, his loyal crew. No, he couldn't abandon them now. Reuniting with his brother was important, but so too were the lives of the crew. One day, he would bring them all home.
