A character by
The birds flitted about the garden in happy little bursts and cheerful chirps.

And the cat?

The cat sat on the window sill like a lazy lump.

And not even on the outside of the window.

She sat on the inside, where the temperature was a pleasant 73 degrees.

Where the pillows were soft, the food came in a stainless steel bowl, and life was very comfortable.

Comfortable for the cat, that is.

But not for the cat's shadow, Xoe.

The cat's shadow had always belonged to the cat, of course. But one day, the shadow had enough of her earthly anchor's mundane routine. A cat was meant to live! To chase birds, cause mischief! To really make people question if cats did, in fact, have nine lives.

So one Wednesday afternoon, the shadow left the cat.

Xoe peeled herself away from the cat like a panel of curtains off the wall - in one, violent tug.

And off she went!

Xoe knocked three lamps to the floor in the living room, left one faucet running in the guest bathroom, and squeezed herself through the window frame to chase the birds.

And the cat?

The cat sat on the window sill like a lazy lump.

Xoe bolted across the street and caused two fender-benders between the neighbors, stirred up six dogs throughout the neighborhood into a frenzy of barking, and managed to scare the living daylights out of four school children.

And the cat?

The cat sat on the window sill like a lazy lump.

Xoe raced up a tree and tormented nine squirrels, she caused an elderly woman to fall off her rocker on her front porch, and she topped her afternoon off by destroying a hummingbird feeder with one fell swoop.

And the cat?

The cat sat on the window sill like a lazy lump.

Xoe suddenly found herself quite winded from her adventure. She knew this is how a cat was meant to live! She watched the cat at the window sill, the cat she had been bound to for all these years.

And the cat?

Well, the cat actually seemed quite happy on that window sill, where it was a pleasant 73 degrees.

Where the pillows were soft, the food came in a stainless steel bowl, and life was very comfortable.

And Xoe?

Xoe sat on the window sill like a lazy lump.

A cat's life included naps, too, didn't it?

If you ask Xoe, she had certainly earned it.
