There is a box I keep full of small trinkets that was given to me by a former friend one Christmas. It's got little windows for photos on the sides. "You can put your artwork there," she said. I never did. But the idea behind the gift was sweet.
I own a small book with poems about dogs with a handwritten note by my childhood best friend. We were like 7 and it was probably picked by her mom and I didn't even care much for poetry nor dogs. Yet I still keep the book on my shelf between all beloved notebooks and the like.
The same friend years later bought me a little wallet shaped like Totoro because she knew I liked the studio's films. I now carry my keys in it to easily find them in my bag.
An old classmate made me fall in love with origami after she showed me how to fold paper cranes. I keep trying even though I can never remember all the steps and have to keep looking for tutorials everytime.
A lady at whose office I was taking a course gifted us all small fragrance pouches on our last day there. It has been a long time but the faint scent of citrus and flowers still lingers.
My father was never there for me, yet a leather pouch attached to my belt that was his is one of my most useful things because women’s jeans have no damn pockets and I have to put my phone somewhere.
I admire artists and take something from each to inspire my own works. The wall behind my computer is decorated with tourist postcards featuring old master’s works for reference.
My two jackets are filled with patches designed by new artists I met online. They are the coolest articles of clothing I own.
The coffee I drink now was recommended to me by a coworker.
My go-to easy meal comes from a random comment on Reddit I found under a post about cooking tips. They don't even know I exist, yet their little recipe is a meal I eat every week.
I think about all these little things I know only thanks to other people and have to wonder: "Do other people remember me in a similar way?“
Natsukashii - The adjective originally described wanting to keep something close, wanting to express fondness for something. Over time, this term was used more to describe reminiscences, leading to the modern meaning. [source]
