He had been cursed.

It wasn’t the first time someone had cursed him. It came with the job — of course — with the thieving and plundering and sword fighting. People cursed him for those things, again and again. “I’ll get you for this, Olin Torres!” they would say, shaking fists as he made his (hasty) exit.

Every other time, he had escaped. Waving. Laughing. Every other time, he had made a jaunty exit. Returned to the ship, to the crew whom had hired him, to finish the job. Treasure in hand, big dashing smile across his big, dashing lips. Crews would pay him, he would work with them, train them, get them the treasure they sought, and then he would get away. On to the next job.

Olin Torres has been cursed before. But it always was for naught, because Olin Torres always escaped.

Not this time.
