The Mooshroom

Mooshrooms are a species of herbivorous ruminant mammals characterized by the presence of certain red mushrooms growing on their bodies, known as Hapooms. Morphologically and behaviorally, they closely resemble common bovynes, but are distinguished by that symbiotic relationship with fungal organisms that accompanies them throughout their life cycle.

Mooshrooms possess short, dense fur, predominantly red in coloration with light gray patches. Prominent fungal fruiting bodies develop primarily along the dorsal region and are firmly anchored to the skin by specialized mycelial networks adapted to interact with keratinized tissue. It is possible to groom a mooshroom using shears; however, the removal of the fungi permanently disrupts the symbiosis, after which the animal becomes physiologically and behaviorally indistinguishable from an ordinary cow.

Its diet consists primarily of wheat and mycelium, supplemented indirectly by metabolites produced by its fungal symbionts. Analytical studies indicate that the milk produced by mooshrooms is chemically indistinguishable from that of common cows. Under controlled conditions, however, mooshrooms are capable of producing mushroom-based soup instead of milk, a phenomenon attributed to their fungal association.

The species inhabits islands known as Mushroom Fields, characterized by soils covered in nutrient-rich mycelium and the presence of medium-sized mushroom growths resembling trees in red or brown variants, the same found on the biome roofed forest. Mooshrooms are believed to be the only animal species native to these environments, dominated entirely by fungal matter. The absence of predators allows the species to exist peacefully.

Despite the lack of natural predators, mooshrooms are endangered due to their natural rarity and human interference. These interference include adventurers who visit the island and damage the environment, or being removed from their habitat by farmers seeking to have the species for agricultural or ornamental purposes.

Variants

Brown mooshroom is a uncommon variant of Mooshroom with unknown origins and reproduction, discovered in 2018. There are legends that say that if a normal red mooshroom is struck by lightning, it turns into a brown mooshroom. Their mushrooms are known as Snooms. In recent laboratorial tests, Brown mooshrooms seem to like to eat flowers. There is a culinary delicacy made from soup of brown mooshrooms that had a diet of flowers, named "Suspicious stew".

Moobloom is an extinct variant of the species. Little is known about this form; however, it is believed to have maintained a symbiotic relationship with plants rather than fungi, specifically buttercup flowers. The moobloom was characterized by yellow fur with white patterning.

Pumpkow

Pumpkow, a native creature of Shadowglen, exhibits some similarities to mooshrooms, in the form of pumpkins instead. Studies are investigating whether this species is actually related to mooshrooms; there are theories that Pumpkow evolved from Mooblom, explaining its extinction. On the other hand, it may be that they are unrelated and are that way just because they eat a lot of pumpkin.
