Bertram's interest in the unusual and macabre was amplified when his life ended and began anew within minutes. At the age of ten, he drowned in a bay that was home to a powerful being, his heart and brain activity ceasing; but his desire to live was strong enough to reach that otherwordly entity, who decided to allow him a second chance at life.

Ever since his revival, Bertram has been obsessed with the concept of rebirth and has felt, with near-religious certainty, that he was brought back for a purpose. As sure as he is that he has a grand destiny awaiting him, he hasn't quite figured it out yet (or perhaps it just hasn't yet been revealed to him), and for the time being he has devoted himself to the study of necromancy. He spends his days experimenting on dead creatures that he finds, honing different facets of his eerie magic.
