Mils (don't call her that) is a spellcaster. This is illegal. She is exiled for it.

She decides her calling is to bring magic to the people.

It is unclear as to whether she addresses the self-interest evident in this "calling" or not.

Mils (she said don't) is a little headstrong, and acts as her conscious directs her. She can't practice magic, because it is illegal, and that is bad, because she is pretty good at it and -- and shouldn't everyone be able to practice magic if they want? This is how her brain works.

Thus, she embarks on a mission to bring down the people (church/noble society? undecided) who have limited the use of magic to those in power. This, as we have established, is half because she wants to practice magic freely and half because it is the Right thing to do.

She enlists the help of an archer to accompany her on this journey and they fall in miserable gay love.
