"Belay?"

The noktoa perches on the branch of a frosted pine next to Ytiva's ski lodge. If it were not for the tree and glowing crescent on its head, its pastel feathers would hide it quite well against the snow.

"Er," you say. "No thanks?"

The noktoa rustles its feathers and gives you a thoughtful look before saying, "Off belay." It sounds quite pleased with itself.

"... Yup," you confirm, and the noktoa bobs its head and flaps its wings excitedly. You gather it is telling you that you did a good job. You give it a thumbs up and it hoots back happily as you continue on your way.

Notes to Self

Belay is a curious noktoa who resides primarily in Ytiva, though will travel to other regions if they want a change of scenery or overhear something interesting.

The ski lodge and various locals often give it snacks, and Belay can be a bit demanding for food. This would generally be discouraged, especially have it is somewhere between tame and wild, but Belay has proven an invaluable asset when saving people lost in the snow or injured while trying to scale Ytiva's various peaks.

Belay will also appear to those lost in the midst of a snowstorm, making it seem more ethereal than it truly is. The glimpses of light and a shimmering form, the haunting calls of an unknown entity--a guide? An illusion? Does it matter anymore?

Seems to understand some mountaineering terms, and will carry lost souls to safety.

"Belay" is its most used word, so Belay also became its name. It seems happy about this.

"Third man factor."

Largely inspired by mountaineering, cave-diving, and spelunking incidents. That said, Belay's story is not based off of any particular real-life persons or events, and any resemblance is coincidental. Persons far braver than I risk(ed) their lives in the name of discovery and rescue.
