The Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia.
ACCT Philly is the region’s largest animal care and control service provider, serving the City of Philadelphia by contract. ACCT Philly offers adoption, foster and volunteer programs as well as owner surrender prevention resources. Located in North Philadelphia, it takes in nearly 18,000 animals annually, from dogs and cats, to small animals, reptiles, birds and wildlife. ACCT Philly’s mission is to provide shelter, care and life saving efforts for homeless, abandoned, and abused animals and protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of Philadelphia.
ACCT Philly is one of the most under funded shelters in the US, despite being in a major city. They rely heavily on donors, donations and volunteers to provide more than just the bare minimum to run.

Main departments

My time at ACCT Philly began fall of 2020. I started out as an Animal Care Attendant where I cleaned the kennels of and fed the many dogs, cats and small critters that reside there. It's hard work but rewarding, these animals have no place to call home so you make it the best you can for them. Right away people seen my hard work and love for the animals. Shortly after I started I transferred to the medical department and it had become a dream come true. Since I was a kid I wanted to be in the veterinary medicine field. January 2021 I started my role as a veterinary nurse assistant.
My key duties include examining and vaccinating all cats and dogs that come into the shelter, assisting the veterinarian in examining animals that need medical attention, take clinic appointments for our animals in foster care and fill prescriptions for them, provide care for emergencies that come in, provide free euthanasia services and assist the surgeon in spaying and neutering the adopted animals the feral cats. As well as things a Lead is responsible for.
2023 starts with me as lead veterinary nurse assistant! A role I never would would have imagined I'd take as I have a lot of social anxiety. The thought of being in charge of people and getting things done seems immense, but I can handle it.
