Server Move!
For the past two weeks we've been preparing to move all of our operations to Amazon Web Services. We've really been looking forward to making this switch, and have been trying to make it happen for more than a year.
There are a lot of technical specifics that I'll include in a siteupdate post in the next few days, but the gist is that we should have limited to no downtime, depending on your ISP. We've already moved our web server processes, our development servers, and our database server to Amazon. Right now it's "replicating" meaning it has up-to-the-second information from our real database, so moving over should be as easy as flipping a switch.
We'll be updating subeta.net to point to the new servers on Tuesday November 17th at around 1 PM Subeta time. We've worked with our DNS providers to ensure that the update takes 5 minutes for most users, but your ISP may cache that information and it can take up to 24 hours to switch over.
The reason we're moving? A faster and more secure Subeta, with all of the services that we need in one place.

Staff definitely has the responsibility to post updates especially by the time the update was sposed to have happened. When will staff learn that even when things aren't going exactly as planned, any message is better than no communication at all.

I was an engineering intern at AWS this past summer, and worked on tools that probably helped this move! What a cool feeling. (:

I hope this transition goes better than the Neopets one....people over there are still suffering and their transition was a year ago.

Will we be able to use Amazon payments, too?

As someone who went from 13 years of neopets addiction to absolutely quitting thanks to a server move: i'm traumatized.
Really, server move gives me the creeps. I got faith in the staff over here, but please just blindfold me for the duration of the move and imessage me when it's over.

Keith, good luck with the move. Praying for a smooth transition. I'm not at all happy with our server so if there's a chance of a 24 hour downtime you can bet it'll happen here. I'll just have to wait it out and hope Fireside doesn't start until after. *fingers crossed*

Yay! Hopefully no more site going down as soon as I hit quests buttons and running out of time on my whole quest when the site is down.

I'm looking forward to a smoother, faster Subeta with less downtime. Especially for events!
Plus you're doing it before the Black Friday sale and I really appreciate that. :D

Glad to have better service but how many items will we loose and how many achievements. If any? Thanks

@Keith forgive me if this has already been asked, but should we be backing up our accounts over the weekend in preparation for the server move?

I just hope I don't get those Server Errors, it is really windy where I live and the wind is causing the problem, thank you for listening, Mr. Keith.

Looking forward to this. Hopefully this will make Subeta more stable. By the way, the Site Status link doesn't work anymore when the website is down, I'm guessing this is related maybe.

@kbbob Neopets is still somehow living in 1999, where they own their physical servers. I don't really understand why they continued to do that after moving but ¯_(ツ)_/¯. We're in ~the cloud~ which means we just click a button and there is a server populated with all of our information. I spent the last week writing automation scripts, so right now we already have Subeta running on AWS (completely able to be navigated and used), I'm just making sure that we test over the weekend and are 100% ready before Tuesday :P

Will cross everything and hope this switch is "the" one finally. lol Y'all have been told so many times by hosts and such that you "won't have any downtime" and whatnot that I won't hold my breath but will hope that, for once, someone can actually provide you what they promise. :)

Thank You Staff for all your hard work keeping Subeta moving forward! Part of the reason I love being here is it feels like we're always growing and progressing as a site and provided with wonderful features as time goes on.

AWS is an excellent choice in server providers. You can add more server bandwidth and database space with a click of a button, immediately, with no wait. It's a very good move, and even if there is a small blip during the DNS redirect, it's so worth it. Trust me. Good decision, guys!
