I'm a little confused because I very rarely buy the collections, but are we supposed to get a choice of every item in the collection? I really wanted the raven feather charm and the doll/dress so I bought two, but neither came up with the option to choose the Raven Feather Charm. Is it random?

I feel like someone saw my suggestion about srs bizness memento mori, spiritual, etc items for Morostide and if so, thanks! I don't know if I need any of these specifically for TCs, but I'm loving the general theme.

I am the dark, I am the light
The fiery day and bleakest night
My tale is hard, sometimes, to hear
But we must face it without fear
As human history is born
All stories need to find their form
Be it Samhain or Morostide
We do not need a place to hide
For Halloween embraces all
The joy, the darkness, of the Fall

Love the hangman gallow item. Although it's a bit fourth-wall breaking, it's nice to see someone call in some history and not just make it all cute and colorful/popular movies express this year. Makes you really stop and think about what happened in our history, the only sure fire way to be sure the ridiculous behavior we're capable of ceases.
Need a couple of items this month, glad one is for a TC. I always like finding new things to throw in my pets' TCs.

Hmm, this month's theme seems a bit dark even for Halloween/Morostide! As much as much as I enjoy the occasionally scary movie, or creepy themed item this month's collection just seems a bit darker than usual! Not sure I'll be buying anything from this month's collection. :anguished: :hushed:

I love this collection and I'm not that big on haunting or Halloween lol but you won me over with this. I esp love the doll and the plushie and bean bag and I want the Summoning Kit for a TC :)

@iGetThePoint Yep! The donations presents and the collections used to work differently. Donation presents were random when you’d open them, so you’d have to get a lot and hope your luck was great that day. Each month, I’m moving the donation presents over to work like collections, where you open it up and choose the item you want. :)

I appreciate what you're saying, but I also want to point out witch trials mostly didn't actually persecute witches. Like that sounds counterintuitive but witchcraft was not the metric by which people tended to be declared witches, it was being a social outlier or having a weird birthmark or being disabled or just having someone have a grudge against you.

Speaking of hangings, we just had pirates. Who were notoriously hung (...brain stop don't make a joke...)
Two pirate items, actually.
Historically pirates were very... well, queer. Many pirates were gay/bi men (and men of color escaping torture and enslavement) that were seeking refuge from persecution. Most notably, torture and the gallows.
But that's pirates. Silly me. So, witches.
Many people were killed, dominantly women, but among them were men accused of homosexuality. They were said to be a witches minion. Not even human. Once more queer men were sought out, tortured, and murdered. But we weren't hanged. We were used as fuel to burn witches, the fagots (bundles of sticks used as fuel). Hence why we are called faggots.
The noose is one of many reminders that, historically, I'm not wanted.
What has happened to witches is atrocious. Sorry if it hurts you, but believe me this item's not bad. Witches were not the only targets, historical facts prove otherwise. Stating that in a different context it's fine, also, throws your arguments right out the door. Because historically, I am the other target. You don't get to say that hanging one person is fine, but hanging others is not, because it's a different group of people.
For the record, silencing history is not a good idea. We already have people bleaching it out and changing stories and people to fit an all-white, all-straight (and dominantly all-male) narrative. Some subjects might be hard to swallow, but it's better than making it seem like it was a walk in the park. No, I don't expect something on Subeta to really enlighten people, or at least not many, but that shouldn't stop some things being brought up in ways that aren't mocking or harming people. Most history is candy coated and soaked in so much bleach it's fallen apart and people don't know it. And being silent on the facts makes it easier to do that.

@ona660 Sorry this is a late reply! A bit of both, I would say? Like out of these items, the gallows show a bit of the darker side of the history of witches (because of the hangings etc) while like the doll could be used for malevolent things. We’ve had items in the past that are darker (like blood magic-like things?) and some lighter things, like the gourd skulls and potions we released with them. I’m sure some users have pets that focus on historically accurate witches (I’m sure I’ve seen at least one from the salem-times) where the gallows would make a useful treasure chest item. And that’s kind of the point I’m making, hocus pocus was a lot of fun and jokes around but they also had upsetting points (like Reaper pointed out). We’ve taken all of this into consideration and will continue to do that with our future items. We as a team have discussed how to approach different cultures that use magic while trying not to be horribly offensive (like doing stereotypical voodoo items when voodoo is indeed a religion that’s often misunderstood/miscategorized/made fun of/etc). I’m truly sorry if you see that item as a shot at you/your religion, though!

@ona660 I agree - even if Halloween is dark and goreful themed - more focused on the "unknown", on the "dark", it isn't an excuse to getting up some sensitive subjects out of the box. It's just hurtful and unapologetic. There are things that can be pointed out (such as the existence of witches and wiccans and other similar (for a lack of better wording, "unpopular") religions and cults) without getting into the heavy part of it, but this barrier can be crossed easily without ever being acknowledged.

I get you. I genuinely don't believe they meant to offend either. It's just a calm polite attempt to point out that perhaps this is not the best thing to point out about the past because. Well. We're well aware of it. We all know the witch trails happened. It's just not very nice to make it into a prop basically. I don't think this was done to hurt us at all, but one can't deny the real possibility of people being hurt accidentally. It happens. It's human. Amber apologized and I accept this, I just think people need to take a second glace sometimes. If no one was pointing out what was wrong, there was a risk of a bigger fallout with more possible mistakes. (Example: What if more references to those times like the torture devices because it's dark? Etc.) My intention is not really to insight drama, but to bring attention to the fact that maybe some subjects are just not a good idea. u0u;

@ona660 again, I'm 102% sure staff wouldn't want to offend anyone. Especially considering that Cash Shop items are what keeps the site running. I'm sorry if that happens, and yes, it does refer to a context of witchcraft, but not in a way that it incites genocide or any kind of -ism or doutrination.

context clues my guy.
the rest of the package is about witches and magic.
Other people where hung. yes.
but context clues tell us this item exactly is about this event. This event about witches. Who had to keep their practice and belief secret or be hung.
Gallows, hangings are fine aesthetically, out of this context.
If it'd been released at a different time. in a different context. fine.
it is this context. that it's not good.

@ona660 not only witches were hanged. Criminals were hanged. Traitors were hanged. Back in the past, hanging was the most common form of execution.
I'm sorry this is bad to you, but you gotta understand that, from my point of view, this is exactly facing towards the horrible acts that were commited on the past against people, for their religion (or even people who weren't related to it at all!), not exactly inciting genocide.

tbh i consider hocus pocus an odd case out becase the item itself is...... uch more akin to the real life stuff than the movie.
yea the movie was dark but satirical to me idk. I really only mentioned it because theres gifs of it bellow and i was afraid it'd be used to conter my arguement at all which. It really wasn't even in my argument int he first place, I just added it post haste.
but the gallows ITEM seems to refer to the IRL witch trial hangings.
And while there where a lot of innocent folks caught in the crossfire one can't deny that the target was witches... Really it's just left a bitter, heartbroken taste in my outh more than anything. It's not very polite for Halloween items to remind you of genocide.

I'm not trying to be hurtful, but although Hocus Pocus was bright and somewhat silly, the Sanderson sisters are children's souls and were hanged for that at the beginning of the film. They also sewed Billy's mouth shut and buried him alive. It wasn't really all that light-hearted. I don't think staff meant any offense to anyone who practices at all, it's an acknowledgement of the things that happened in the past - and the vast majority of people hung as witches were not actually practitioners - there were quite a lot of women and men who had nothing to do with witchcraft in any form.

Also I hope it's clear that i'm so in love with other witch items on the site??? Like. Even/Especially the gord witch's eyes which i'd consider a darker item for witchcraft! I'm just bothered by the hangings being used as a prop.

@Amber
well. The darker side of witches, or the darker side of our history? I don't really mind the hangman's item because wow look at it! Gorgeous, but. the description and the association of it to witchcraft is the part that's bothering me. The rest of the set is really really nice! My problems are with the gallows and highlighting that hey, your people where hung burn and tortured. Even women who weren't, if they where accused of it where burned hung and tortured.
I'm just deeply concerned that there's more salem trial themed things on the way...
With hocus pocus, it was all fun and bright and silly, but with this? It's just sort of.... sad. Deeply, deeply sad.
To me having items the represent the time of our murders in mass numbers is sort of in bad taste??
I'm trying very hard to be light about this but something leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
But!!!!!!!!!!
I am very excited to see darker items as well because hello yes #aesthetic. c: I just really.... really hope there isn't anymore Trails/Gallows/Persecution on the way. Ghosts and goblin are much better than historical murders. :c
I hope this makes sense?
<3 I genuinely love subeta and I know you guys are very loving, I just hope it's taken into consideration in the future. )o(

@ona660 Our intention isn’t to hurt you or any other pegans/witches/etc. The hallow shows that during the time of the witch burnings/hangings, it was a very real threat to practice what you were. We didn’t want to candy coat this collection, because while witches are a very popular halloween costume it does have a deep background of more than just “haha crooked nose, boils, and broom sticks!!!’. Just because this collection happens to highlight the darker side of witches, it doesn’t mean there is an absence of good/light/nature witches! I believe we had some nature-themed witch items last year from the patch, and I look forward to what we do this year. This Morostide in general we want to have darker items than our usual cheery pumpkins and bright candy.

Brr. This theme just gives me a good ol' bone chill. The amount of morbidity that went into this theme is absolutely on point. Rather dark, but hey, it's the month of Halloween. The Demon Summoning Kit is my favorite in this collection. Hopefully, we have a lot of spoopy things planned for Morotside this year.

You know. I don't think the intent behind this was malicious, but I feel rather.... hurt. Every time around this year witchcraft gets a boom of kids mimicking our stuff and inserting another religion into our ways(Looking directly at you, people putting upside down crosses on us.) to a point where I think people don't actually realize witches are alive and well, and a very real RELIGION. In fact there are many, many branches alive and aware of our bloody prosecution throughout history.(Though admittedly there are some branches of nonreligious witchcraft, just as valid) There is something very upsetting and hurtful about seeing a noose in a package about witches. The description of the item really does not help. I genuinely have faith that staff is not a bunch of witch burning Christians but... There's something inherently heart breaking about being reminded that we where once not protected by the law. You wouldn't be making Hitler items in now, a time when Jewish people are being openly prosecuted across the globe. please, try not to forgot that Pagans, Wiccans, and Witches alike are still real people in this world today, and we are still in danger. Please, try to keep us in mind. I apologize for any spelling errors or if my words seem rash and harsh but admittedly i'm a bit teary eyed as I say this. I've retyped it a few times.
Please do not forget we are real in your times of festivities and fun.
Blessed be. )O(
