🎁 Mysterious Melody Returns!
This year, Melody has revamped her holiday gift exchange to bring even more festive cheer and fairness to the season! We heard your feedback about previous years' one-to-one matching and are excited to introduce group exchanges with a sprinkle of Melody magic. Here’s how it works:
What’s New This Year?
- Group Matching: Instead of being paired with one person, you’ll join a group with four other real users and Melody herself! This helps ensure the gift exchange stays lively and fun, even if some participants are less active.
- Melody’s Magic: Our beloved Luminaire NPC, Melody, will actively add items to the gift pool throughout the day by purchasing from user shops. This ensures there’s always a little something extra for everyone, and you might see her in your shop logs!
- Daily Resets: The exchange resets at midnight Subeta time every night. You can join one group per day, and you’ll be matched as soon as four other participants are ready.
How It Works
- Contribute Gifts: You can add up to five items to your group’s gift pool each day.
- Quality Counts: While price matters, Melody also values how useful and unique your items are, as well as how often they’re used in the community.
- Gift Distribution: At midnight, Melody will distribute all the items in the pool randomly, ensuring fairness by making sure you don’t receive any of your own gifts.
A Few Notes for the Best Experience
- Think Fairly: To keep things fun and avoid disappointment, consider balancing your contributions. Adding extremely high-value items every day may not result in equally valuable gifts, simply because of the nature of the exchange.
- Everyone’s Different: Remember, users have varying access to items and points. This is about embracing the joy of giving, not just the value of receiving.
Looking to the Future
While we’re not using it yet, Melody is keeping track of the quality of gifts you contribute. This score might influence future groupings, so your generosity (or lack) could help you match with equally enthusiastic participants in the future.

This needs a lot of work. Am unable to see all of my items available to donate, and keep getting 404 errors when I try to view another page of items.

Lighthouse I agree, some people really put in no thought. Since posting my original comment I've definitely had better groups but there's still always that one person putting in like only fairies lol. I don't even think that's just having less to contribute, to me that just screams "I don't give a shit" and that's what grinds my gears. I'm def having fun and enjoy this MM much more than the old one, I've gotten a couple wishlist items and when I get stuff I don't need I just put it back in the pool instead of selling it because I don't want the profit, someone else will appreciate it for free. I just don't think there will ever be a way to get around people taking advantage and it's sad people are like that.

I'm actually extremely happy with this MM, maybe I just keep being very lucky but I feel like every day there has been one or two people who put in very good items and most days one of them has put in extremely good stuff and I keep getting a nice variety of things back, makes me want to put in more and more valuable items to pass the generosity of others forward. I'm so happy with what I've gotten so far that I would not mind even if I got just junk for the rest of the month. I also keep getting mostly 6 out of 28 items when everyone donates, but usually there's at least few items with so good value/from my WL that I don't really mind someone else getting a few more. Definitely prefer this over the old MM.
I am officially done with MM. Everyone contributed but I still only got 6 items out of the 28.

I'm really enjoying this version of MM.
One thing I noticed though is that on the mobile version, the join page didn't reload after I was added to a group, so ended up missing a day, as I kept waiting for it to tell me I was added to a group & after about fifteen minutes got distracted & forgot all about it. Now I refresh several times after five minutes to make sure I don't miss again.

Mysterious Melody IS FUN and I mostly put items from 200k to 3m as I'm not super rich, but seeing people join to put only junk under 10k sP is kinda sad.
So something I've wondered for the past 2 rounds, if you give no items in this MM, do you still get items in return and more importantly, can you get some of the items others have given? For the past 2 days there has been 1 person in my groups who gave 0 items and both times I got 6 items back. If everyone else who gave items also got 6 back, there would've been 5 left in the pool as melody added 8, were those 5 given to the one who gave nothing? To me that would be unfair as no matter how broke you are you can always afford to give something, especially since you're getting something in return.

My group from yesterday (12/11) gift's have not been distributed...I've gotten no notification, and I can see the items I put in when I click the link. I also can't join a new group.
Adina my exact feelings atm. First night I did cash shop and subq items and learned my lesson lol last night went a lot lighter and got an even worse group. But I’m nervous about adjusting what I spend because of the data that’s being collected, I want fun groups but I also don’t want to feel taken advantage of x____x

Anyone else here who literally can't use the Kumos site at all? After a few seconds every page I load just crashes or something and google chrome gives me a "STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION" error. Any way to fix this?
I really love this feature, I also like seeing what I get. xD It's nice to know some of what I'm getting and having other things a mystery. I hope this feature stays for a long time.
Anyone having issues with the page only showing half of Melody's head and not loading or scrolling fuether? I can't access the page at all :c It was working just fine yesterday...
Loving this but weirdly got one of my items back. I did the night before in the testing groups too so maybe there is a slight chance?

My group last night was lovely! I think i put in more expensive stuff, but i mostly used currencies like Blue building/quest points so they were still "free" to me. Today I put in slightly cheaper ones (but still in the 100k-1mil range) which was more the speed of what I got last time. It is nice to have a place to send some stuff thats been accumulating, be it currencies or items sitting in my shop all year
Could we get the Mysterious Melody link added to the sidebar of the news page OR could the link to Mysterious Melody from Melody's Cottage link to the new Kumos MM? It still currently just takes you to the "this feature is broken, there will be a news post if it unbreaks" error message. Once this news post is buried by a few other news posts, there's not a convenient way to find MM again!
@Rainstorm_Witch This new MM is on Kumos, not the regular site. Just like the pumpkin composting.
@Rainstorm_Witch the site is shifting over to kumos, the new website, bit by bit as Keith reprograms aspects of the site. So new/updated features like MM will be over on the new site. You must be logged in on Kumos to participate. It is your same subeta login.
@Reo The rules indicate that the algorithm will at some point begin to group people automatically by the average value of their offered gifts, so that people who consistently contribute low-value gifts will be grouped with other people who do the same, in order to disincentivize that kind of thing.

I think I saw a feedback thread earlier but am not seeing it now. I received two of my own gifts back as a heads up.
This is exciting! I always found the old MM mildly stressful or an outright disappointment, but this seems much more relaxed. Keeping limit on how much you can give each day is one less thing to worry about. It'll be interesting so see how things progress over the next few days. I'm already planning out what to give tomorrow! :)
I hope my contributions aren't too cheap... I always have a hard time with events like these!! Still, this is very fun, thank you for adding it :o)
Choosing my presents I was very sorry to again realize, that all my precious stacks of (retired) items have become completely worthless - just as with Melody's books right now etc. :-( Not only can we no longer profit (as planned to make sP somehow) from them to get new/wl stuff, but they have lost their option as valued and sought after gifts :-(
I like, how clearly MM is set up. Choosing from invy is fast and practical, being able to remove/exchange items is a bonus, esp. if you happen to misclick or find smthg better throughout the day...

This sounds like fun, but I don't really like using the new site because it's still buggy, and unfinished....I wish we could have gotten this same concept, but on the OG site....That's just my preference because it's easier to navigate this site for me
Well, I did receive one of my own items back, but it was a nice item, so that's alright, lol. I had a nice time! Everyone's additions were very sweet.
@Rienquish ah, that must have been the problem. I keep forgetting that midnight Subeta time is 9:00pm my time. Tried again and got the notification this time. Thanks for clarifying that for me!
@ChatLunatique you should be getting a notification that says "You have been added to a group for Mysterious Melody!" with a link to the group. Did you join close to Subeta midnight? As that's when the items get distributed, maybe that made it bug out and not send the notification?
I think I’ll stick to the forums as this doesn’t seem quite fair - this round I put pricy items in, didn’t receive any WL items like others posting below, and got mostly cheap items (4 items were under 11k).
OK, I'm confused. I followed the link in the news post, clicked on the join group button, was told I'd be notified when the group was formed, then got a alert that the group was finished. What did I miss? How do I submit my gifts to the group?
After the first round I'm super happy with this! Got a nice variety of items back and 3 of them wl items! Not expecting to get this lucky every time but will definietly try to participate on each round. So far this seems more fun and fairer than the old system :)

Having just received my gifts from my first group, I'm very pleased with how this works; I got two WL items!
@Lighthouse If I'm understanding correctly, this just means that people in various price brackets will be placed together once there's enough data. There's no right or wrong price range. So just do what you feel most comfortable/happy with. We're all here to have fun :)
I kind of liked the old MM, but am willing to give this a try. However, this one makes me feel like I'm gonna have to be rich to participate, being judged on value of items.

Really like this new system! Looking forward to how it will work out for everyone. The (more or less) random distribution within a group with a maximum number of items makes it way less stressful imo. Much less "omg will the other person send me something way more expensive? Or nothing at all? Will my gifts be nice enough?" And hopefully that way everyone gets a little something that makes them smile.
@Beldam There won't be a way to please everyone equally I guess. I'll try to put in a mix of some things that if you don't use them at least sell easily (like wizard tokens, stat boosters, etc) and some cute items I hoarded over the years preferably useful and or pricey, like books, food, old event items, wearables. Maybe throw in something lumi/winter themed even if it's something cheaper. Like imagine you get a random anon giftbox and it's four slots sporks and a moldy bread, that's kinda sad, but if it's a cookie, a scarf and some tokens? Nice, even if it's cheap items!

Oh I got in quick. I love how you can see how many presents everyone contributed, that's neat. I can't wait to see how this first wave goes. I hope everyone is grateful for whatever they receive. It's the season of giving, MM should never be about profit. I'm definitely going to experiment more with this system (different gifts of assorted price points) to see how much it varies with Melody and what not. Mine says melody 8 items, so I wonder if that's 2 a person.
So do you opt in on a daily basis, meaning you don't have to participate in MM every day? Like, a new MM matching every day rather than a single dedication for a whole month?
Group gifting seems better, but I think people will still be able to game the system by only putting in cheap items knowing they won't get those back.
I'm starting with some nice old items that are pricey. I don't care that I won't probably get equivalent stuff. They've been hanging out in my vault since forever anyway, hopefully they'll make my group happy! And if not, they can sell them for SP to buy the things they'd like instead, lol! Zero guilt!
