red words

The walls were awfully white. She couldn't remember them being this white before she had fallen asleep. They'd been covered with crudely but vividly colored landscapes, she was sure of it. In fact, she had taken a nap right there on the floor because she was worn out from painting so long. The brush was still right here in her hands--

Her fingers closed over thin air.

Confused, she pushed on her glasses and looked around the floor. The buckets of paint, the many brushes she had, the pencils she used to sketch out scenery with, all of it was gone. Did someone put them away while she as asleep? Maybe, but--

Everyone was gone.

With a jolt she remembered, and quickly huddled down and crawled to the nearest corner. In this luxurious castle that was built just for her, she was left alone, save for a single servant whose name and face she couldn't recall. Every time, she forgot her solitude, and every time she remembered it, she panicked and broke down.

Did everyone forget about me?

The room was completely bare, the walls an unstained white. Nothing to be afraid of, but she brought her knees to her chest and buried her face in her arms, terrified. Her glasses got in the way, so she took them off and threw them towards the center of the room, eyes shut tight, determined not to look at her surroundings.

Because they were there. She could feel them, hear them whisper, and taunt, and sneer. They never quite left her alone. Sometimes they hid in the edges of her vision, where she couldn't see them clearly. Sometimes they were heard but not seen, laughing as she looked around wildly and cowered. But they were always there, ready to torment her.

They didn't like cheerfulness. They would fall silent and retreat when she surrounded herself with the bright colors of the rainbow. They also didn't like her friends, who brought forth a different kind of happiness. But here, alone in this silent and spacious whiteness, she was at their mercy.

They never liked you. Their smiles and their kind words were all fake. Who would love a broken girl like you? They left, and they forgot about you already.

"That's not true!" she sobbed, pressing her face harder into her sleeves in a futile attempt to stop her tears. "Not true, not true! You're all lying!"

Where are they now? You're all alone.

She screamed and raced out of the room. She'd kicked something out of the way-- from the sound of it, it seemed like a metal bucket full of liquid-- but she didn't care, didn't stop to look. She virtually flew down the hallway, trying to outrun the dark shapes, the voices, the menacing nothing-ness, but to no avail. She tried to think of the past, tried to bring up the memories of the people close to her, but fear scattered her thoughts.

She couldn't remember much of the time before this castle. There were bright lights and a lot of emptiness. A lot of people in white coats. The lady with the cold smile and the clipboard, asking many questions that didn't make sense.

There had been a Shadow keeping her company, with a grin far too wide for its face. It was very tall and thin, with long, spidery fingers that it used to write on the walls of her cell. It wrote all the time, in bleeding red letters, to distract her. Nobody else could see the writing. Nobody else could see the Shadow. The lady just smiled and told her that it wasn't real. It was just a figment of her imagination, all of it.

What is real?

She certainly didn't know anymore. It was all so terribly real to her, she felt she could die from it.
